problem is, im running linux on my main machine, so my version is notoriously out dated.. even saving a single format to a folder, still gives me a folder in that folder for each ebook.

I would like it if someone could confirm that for me. I have a mobile phone that does the same thing, and the only workaround is to use a USB cable that just has power on it, no data, no idea if that'd work on the reader.
I got my 600 reader last October and ran into the same problem. It appeared to charge, but completed in about 5 minutes. The discharge was equally fast. So I wrote to Sony. They confirmed that a USB wall charger will not work to charge the reader. They promised to forward my concern to their engineers. They offered no explanation as to why the reader was designed that way. I don't understand why the reader could not have been designed to charge from any 5 volt USB socket and still open the Reader Library software automatically when plugged into a a fully functional USB port. I use an inexpensive USB wall charger to charge my iPod, yet iTunes works just fine when I plug it into my computer. Why is the reader so fussy?

OK answer my own query.

Dont use the plus on the keyboard

but use the plus at the bottom left hand side of the screen.

Must say the manual and the help is very poorly written.

Good info on this forum very usefull to a new user,

Jeff

First, a matter of terminology, Sony does not support "folders". They have "collections" which are similar to one level folders. The difference is a folder would actually contain an eBook file. The file would not appear in any other folder, or in the main library. A collection looks like a folder, but only holds a pointer, or reference name, to a file in the main library rather than the actual file. That means you can have an ebook file in the main library, and multiple collections with the same book name in each, but only one actual copy of the ebook file. It's a database thing.

How were you "setting up folders." Both Sony Reader software (not recommended), and Calibre (highly recommended) facilitate creating and managing collections. There is no practical limit to the number of collections you can create.

With Sony Reader software, you click on the plus "+" sign to create a new collection. While I was writing this response, I see you found the right spot.

With Calibre, you add a name for a collection in the either the "Tags" or "Series" field. This can be done from the main database window, or the Edit metadata information window. You can put multiple names (not ebook names, collection names - i.e. Mystery, Romance, Thrillers) in the "Tags" field, and a collection will be created for each name.

I hope this helps.

To put MSJim's description in very, very basic terms: "collections" are essentially Sony-speak for "tags".

Hi All Thanks MSJIM

I will give Calibre a look. I have had my prs600 about 2 weeks now (love it) for reading but just coming to terms with the O/S.

Great info and help on the forum guys.

I have a new trick to add -- I create to-do or packing lists in Word, then print them as pdfs (using DoPDF: http://www.dopdf.com/) and then tick off the list using the notes function. If it's a packing list or something I repeat again, I can erase all my tick marks and start over next time

That's a very cool idea! I have a couple of SF&F conventions coming up this autumn, and I'll probably pack much the same stuff for both. I have Packing Pro on my iPhone, but it's a lot of hassle to set up a list on there for the sake of a weekend trip!

Hate to sound smug, but Macs have had PDF export built-in for years
