There is a step by step guide in the ePUB section. Kobo readers should take a look at that forum in our web site as it has lots of data that is valuable to Kobo users with its dependence on ePUB.

If you look at the original version; it uses TTF font's; not OTF. Also, the fonts are placed at the base level of the ePub file; not in a sub directory.

So the urls in the CSS are of the form

Code:
src: url(Times-New-Roman-400-Italic-7c7c6c12-7019-4025-8edf-1d05c9eb7dbd.ttf)
and not

Code:
src: url(../Fonts/Times-New-Roman-400-Italic-7c7c6c12-7019-4025-8edf-1d05c9eb7dbd.otf)
It looks like http://typeface.neocracy.org/fonts.html has the ability to convert from OTF to TTF

This may be a good way to have our ePubs shown in our preferred font on the eBook reader (by exploiting the CSS font settings overwrite the Kobo settings bug).

I'll investigate what's the best reading font and try to make a few ePubs with that font and see how it looks like...

Certainly you can use any fonts from OS system (Windows\fonts\*.ttf) I love “Georgia”.

You can certainly use any fonts for your own reading pleasure but not legally and you cannot legally distribute eBooks containing these fonts. Fonts are copyrighted and you need to make sure you use freely distributable fonts if you plan to provide these eBooks to anyone else. Some can be distributed only if obfuscated and there are threads in the ePUB section on how to do that.

Ok. Thanks for testing it.

If you rename the epub to zip and open it with winrar o winzip you can see how the trick works. There are 2 key files inside the epub:

- style.css
- DroidSansFallback.ttf

If you open style.css with a text editor you can see it points to the font to use (DroidSansFallback.ttf) . This file can be more complex defining things like margins and line height... If you put this 2 files inside any epub and then zip it again you can display chinese text.

Now here I attach another epub with Chinese, Korean and Japanese in it. It uses the same method but the style.css is more complex, with more parameters such as line-spacing, indentation . Please tell me how it works and if it looks good (I don't have a Kobo).

http://ifile.it/he87awg

EDIT: The file content.opf must also declare the location of style.css as in:

<item id="style" href="style.css" media-type="text/css"/>

Check the epub subforum for more info on embedding fonts
