Turning off ebook readers on the airplane is sheer stupidity. It's just an example of how bureaucracies work - it's just easier to tell everybody to turn everything off. My son just flew on US Air with inflight wifi. So my unconnected to anything Sony will interfere with something?

I say it's spinach & I say to hell with it.

I have not had one mistaken for a ipad yet.

I do find it ironic that the Kindle is getting mistaken for a ipad though.

Maybe "kindle" is on it's way to becoming "kleenex." That is, a brand name that becomes the generic name for the particular kind of product.

Here in Chicago, where I ride the el or bus every day, I have yet to see anything other than a Kindle. And damn few of those.

I'd be hesitant to pull my iPad out on the el, it screams "rob me".

Depends on which train & the time of day, and what stop you get on/off.

Your observation could also be extended to encompass iPhones, kindles, and other electronics.

I think the iPad is a lot more "bait" right now. I do agree that time of day matters.

Speaking of "is that an iPad"...my wife was driving, and I was in the passenger seat reading, and the McDonald's drive in guy says "is that an iPad?!".

It's the same reason that zunes are much more safe than iPod touch's

Yep. Don't buy the iPad for what it could be, but it for what it is. And don't forget you need a computer of some kind to sync to. The iPad isn't a stand-alone device.

Quite right. Another example would be iPod, which has become synonymous with MP3 players. Many times, you'll see a brochure for a car stereo or something, and they happily point to how they have an "iPod input", when all they really mean is that it has an Auxiliary input which any player than uses the standard 35mm cable (which is most of them) can connect to. Another example would be Xerox.

By the way, I agree with what was said about Apple's marketing. I'm not a 'fanboy' by any means, but I have to give Steve Jobs & Co. credit for the image and brand recognition that they have created. Tech products, and specially IT products, have always been viewed as a 'geeky' thing. Apple have long since transcended that stereotype, to the point that now, far from being viewed as geeky, owning anything by Apple -- whether iPod, iPad, iPhone, MacBook or whatever -- assures your status of being 'cool' and 'in'.

Unbelievable. Congrats, Apple; your somewhat overrated products changed the entire tech industry in the last decade.

LOL!!

That's hilarious! HAHA! Man, that is one unhappy (and unwilling!) customer.

Not a big Apple fan, I think?
