I like the leather covers. The brown one has a suede finish vs. the smooth on the other colors, though. I really didn't like the texture on the inside of the black cover, but that's just me (I don't like the brown suede either). I got green.

Well, I'm glad I found this thread, because I think it answers my question about using magnets to hook my Kindle into my zipper cover.
The cover I purchased has a pocket on the back side. I slipped a piece of flashing in there, and stuck a couple of 1/16 inch thick magnets on it to see if they would stick.. They do, quite well. So, I'm thinking of gluing two or three of them to the gray portion of the back of the Kindle. My thought is that that part of the case would be easier to clean up or replace if I decided to remove them at some later date. These aren't the strongest magnets in the world or anything ... about 3.1 pounds of pull force per magnet. But, I'm thinking it might be a good way to go, and shouldn't damage my Kindle. Any thoughts?? |

By making a device with built-in natural magnets designed to be attracted to an external leather case with metal is like making a PDA with exchangeable face plates but without an a replaceable battery.
First problem arises when the device comes within close proximity to other magnetically sensitive devices. Instead of being able to temporarily pull the cover off, you'll simply have to leave the whole ebook reader behind. Second problem arises when the natural magnet loses magnetism, being irreplaceable, becomes just an extra dead weight inside the device Sounds like a poor engineering decision to me. ![]() |

The magnets in the reader are extremely small. Magnetic field strength falls off rapidly based on the distance from the magnet. Magnets the size of the one in these devices are practically invisible to "magnetically sensitive" devices at distances greater than a couple of mm.
Secondly, neodymium magnets (neodymium-iron-boron or NIB) - as these almost certainly are - keep their magnetic strength very well, unlike the older Alnico magnets which naturally degrade without special handling. NIB magnets almost certainly have a far longer lifetime than the device they've been embedded in. Case in point - my old Sony Librie has exactly the same kind of magnetic latch for the case as the new 505, and it's fine ![]() www.dansdata.com is a good place to start looking for human readable info on NIB magnets. |

Well, the magnets I am attaching to my Kindle are neodymium, and I'm hoping that they will not damage anything in my purse.
We'll see. |
