Volcano Plume Pictures

The satellite imagery shows the plume just north of Scotland (yellowish grey)...

currently they're saying 48 hours, which is more than a few, and plenty long enough to cause trouble for my cousins. i'm hoping for a wind change...

If I read it correctly, they are saying that the entire problem could last 48 hours, rather than every country being affected for 48 hours. However, since the ash cloud is blowing southwards, France is obviously going to be affected later than more northern countries.

Maybe it's getting out of Newfoundland that's more of a problem.

There's a lot of speculation as to how long it will last - but honestly, despite 'expert' opinions it could last for weeks - months even ....

If the eruption continues, we shall have to pray for a change in the (upper-level) winds....

Perhaps - some of the routes take the Great Circle and could pass close to Iceland and the northern end of the plume.

Presumably they would re-route to a more southerly route if necessary. Longer, but (if there's a volcanic cloud in the way) safer.

that's true, and then they need a destination.

But not only a destination, but also alternatives (I think 2 - but my memory's not what it used to be).

I'm wondering how they'll be sure when to give the all clear - wouldn't want to run into a lingering pocket of the stuff up there.

Apparently they send up aircraft to take air samples:

That, presumably, won't happen until the eruption itself stops .... Though satellite imagery will help - as will the computer simulations of how the plume will move. The UK Met Office has plenty of experience with upper air wind forecasting....

We, here in the beautiful Sandwich Islands live with it all the time, especially with interisland flights. Planes coming and going to the Big Island, where the active volcano is, have the highest cycle (one takeoff and one landing) rate of any in the world, and are continually flying through vog (volcanic fog composed of gases and ash from Kiluea).

It results in a higher maintenance schedule for the aircraft, but little in the way of safety issues. Some of the older plane’s windshields look like they’ve been sand blasted, and the paint work is shiny only on new planes.

I don’t often have the opportunity to call the Brits wimps, but this is one!
