Most likely, the Cybook is having some problem opening the book. When a .thn file does not exist, the Cybook has to open the book in order to generate the thumbnail, and it crashes. If the .thn already exists, the Cybook does nothing... until you try to open the book, and then it crashes.

This is really frustrating. I read mostly popular fiction, either from my public library or from places like Fictionwise or Books on Board. Since upgrading to the ePUB firmware, I"ve found about 1/3 of the books I've purchased or checked out wont' work on the device. And despite numerous emails to Bookeen, I haven't gotten any response from them. I'm now unwilling to buy any more books since I don't know what will work and what won't.

Where do other people get their ePUB books? Is there a particular store or publisher people have had good luck with as far as books working on this devied?

Here is the answer I got from Bookeen about that problem.

Monsieur,

And here is a translation of that reply...

Sir

It is likely that the problem stems from the fact that your Cybook does not have enough working memory. You have in fact the first model of the Cybook Gen3 whose memory was smaller than newer models. This is why some EPUB documents are not supported on your device.

We regret this problem. Be sure that our technical team is working on it and everything is done to correct it but we can not guarantee you a prompt correction.

Sincerely,

Bookeen Support Team

I hope it can help some people... As I said before, I ony read fiction from Official bookstore. Bookeen does not leave us much hope. The only other solution that I see is to DeDRM all the ePub that you legally buy. I am on a MAC and this seemstougher to do with ePub than it was for the Mobi format...

I have ordered a Kobo!!!

Regards,

Geroges

Ah, that make sence now.
I was wondering why some peaple had so many problems with bought ePub when I had none. That's because i'm using an opus, so I don't have that problem.

If there is an issue with working memory on older Gen3 models then I cannot really see how Bookeen can solve that other than take the devices back and upgrade the memory. Surely firmware updates will only go so far ... ?

from what little I've seen of ePub files, they seem large in comparison to mobi files - in some cases 2mb for ePub and 3-400kb for mobi.

Guess it can be helped by tweaking memory management. But yeah, no miracle probably.

Only if the content is different. For the files I create, with the same text and images, the .epub is usually a bit smaller than the .mobi, although the .mobi does not have the highest (huffman) compression.

I wonder where that came from.

Just to weigh in I have a similar issue with some epub books. The two I got from FictionWise both fail, and indeed these are over 2mb. I bought the latest Jack Reacher from WHSmug (bloody expensive) and it is a more normal size and worked fine. AFAIK mine is not the oldest model 500mb internal?

My workaround for the two failing books was to convert them in calibre to pdf (not ideal as the font is too small), having first liberated them from drm hell.

I've not had the need to attempt it - but I wonder what would happen if the font files were removed from the ePub envelope.

Another choice would be to use Calibre and create a mobi file and see what that does when it is converted back into ePub ...

Saying that, though, a purchased book ought to work correctly no matter the device !

I notice in the new firmware features list it states:

Fix (bug in version 2.0)
Lower memory consumption with large font files.

I'm not able to do the upgrade for a few more days, I just wondered if anyone else who was seeing this problem has tried the new firmware, and whether it prevents the reboot with large files?

"Large Font File" is not "large ePub file" (or "large PDF file")

there seems a trend for publishers to put large font files as part of the epub wrapper - I noted one that was 1MB for fonts, out of 1.8MB for the whole book ....

I had read that one reason certain ePubs were so large was because of the large font files included, which is why I had hopes this might solve my problem. Unfortunately I upgraded to the new firmware and it still exhibits the same bootup loop on large ePUB books.

I have been able to read these books by converting them to mobi in Calibre and then converting them back to ePUB. It occurs to me that if I am going to do that, maybe I should have stayed at the 1.x firware, but some ePUBs work without having to jump through these hoops.

Does anyone know of a way to remove the fonts from an ePUB file without converting to mobi and then back to ePUB?
