Hi Marcel, tjdean,

Many thanks for your help. Your combined suggestions indeed solve the problem completely.

The use I had in mind is pretty standard: exporting notes taken on the DR into text usable by a word-processing program.

A priori, it was not clear to me whether the best possibility would be to have an adequate program such as xstroke directly on the DR or to convert what you write in xournal into text on your computer. The IREX web-page being closed since I became interested in the device and such questions, it is somewhat difficult for me to see what the company originally had in mind for notes taken on the Iliad or the DRs as a lot of threads refer to discussions on their web-page.

But having downloaded a trial version of the software suggested by tjdean, which works much, much better than what I expected, even for cursive writing, I now indeed believe that the optimal solution is to

- take notes in xournal in landscape mode with some sensors locked
- export to IRX format
- export file to computer and convert there with the software suggested by tjdean

any improvements on this workflow out there ?

I am currently making improvements to the xournal port. I think I have screen refreshes and key handling better under control now. I will play a little with it coming week to see if all functionality is still working.

Are there other issues that I should look at?

When writing text in Xournal (dr-0.6), the program continually freezes for a few seconds (looks like a screen refresh), although I checked the option "Experimental Update". This impedes me taking notes at meetings and caused me to -reluctantly- get back to the native notes application (though Xournal has superior functionality).

Did I do something wrong or am I just asking too much?

No this is still one of the problems in the 0.6 version. I have a solution for this problem, but I am still checking if there is some impact on other functionality. I will post the new version in a few days.

Thanks to all of you. It is nice to see so many people working with, trying to improve and sharing knowledge about the DR1000S.

I'm looking forward to the new version of Xournal and I'll have look at the software suggested by tjdean. I hope it works in Dutch too.

Oops, you are right. At that moment I was looking at the FBReader code, so I typed the name of the wrong application. I corrected the message.
