That is exactly my problem DHer...

Of course I'd like to get all my books DRM free and for free...but I would also like to see the authors getting paid...especially the good ones.
I must admit that I live with the constant temptation of pirating content, the sources are not too hard to find...and there is little choice right now...this is not good, and it's really a convenience thing...if it's easier to get something illegally than officially, then something is badly in need of repairs...:-(

Indeed!

If they dont offer choices of purchasing books legally then the only other way is to get them illegaly. Why do we bother pressing the industry to offer more books AND pay for them AND only rent them (DRM), when its so easy to get free ebooks that have no restrictions on them.

If the industry actually wants to make money of of us, then they should figure out ways to offer us books and incentives to buy them rather than pirate them. A good analogy would be helping the a thief break into your house and give him a hand carrying you TV set to his car.

So again: Why bother?

That's the iTunes lesson - put everything in a convienient software, where buying the song is actually easier than searching for it in p2p's.

Apparently, the idea also occurred to iRex, which is how they planned iDS to be. However, like all other software features that were announced for the Iliad, it's in the Sony.

And there I thought the 3 laws of iPod where:

1. Make buying the song and putting it on the player as reliable as dropping a hammer in a 1G gravity field and having it hit the floor: you aren't surprised when the song gets on the player.

2. Give customers something they perceive of as value for their money, rather than what the labels think of as enough money.

3. DRM the content so people don't give in to temptation and start giving it away, but don't make the DRM so intrusive it interferes with "value for money".

No one has really accomplished this for books, so far. We'll see when I get my Sony Reader...

Apple has not accomplished point 3. Moving your iTunes collection to a non-DRM device is not possible for the average user and a big hassle for more knowledgeable users.

Yup, but the average user blames it on the "incompatible device" and swears to buy an iPod next time... I know several people who listen to music using iTunes and their iPod. Just like with "word documents", they think that if something's not compatible with that, it's the fault of that something.

creating a monopoly 101:

1. wrap things up neatly for customers
2. see customers buying your stuff
3. break the format so hard that it's impossible to create/read content in this format without your tools
4. see customers blaiming the problems on the people not using your tools, because, you see, "it's so easy to use"
5.-24. Profit
25. see the regulation agencies in different countries act
