I did the primary battery thing with the Librie, never ever saw anything like 10,000 page turns per set of AAA's (even Eveready Lithiums at $12 a set.) I used mine every single day and pushed so many secondary (eventually I gave up on Primary Batteries) battery cycles through its battery compartment that the plastic failed.

What I longed for was a consumer feature Sony used to build into their portable Mini-Disc units, a battery compartment that took primary or secondary AA/AAA batteries. The unit would recharge the secondary batteries if they were installed, and if the secondary batteries went flat in the field you could pull 'em and stick in a fresh set of readily available primaries.

Now an iLiad that could do that would be pretty sweet in my experience.

UPS delivered the unit this morning and I got an email from iRex technical support:

Dear Mr. Turner,

thank you for your email and your notification regarding the transport charges.
We would like to inform you that the device has arrived at our repair centre today and we are still investigating why you had to pay for the transport. We will come back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards

Still no word on when the replacement is shipping, which at this point is my number one priority.

No pre-alert from their fulfillment firm, which I'm guessing means that despite my picking up the tab to immediately return the defective unit the fulfillment firm has elected to not immediately ship a replacement unit.

I've sent email to their support email for an explanation but I expect the usual non-answer answer they've trained me to expect from them.

Well they've had the defective unit for two full work days now. A replacement unit has apparently not shipped and the only thing I've gotten from them via email is "We got the unit."

Even a garage company started by selling the founders stereo to raise startup capital can do better than this.

I might as well have saved my money and just waited for them to send me another box with a returns label for all the good it did me to spend the money and send the unit back immediately.

I got the replacement today.

The unit was obviously bad from the moment I tried to plug in the travel hub.

A simple visual or functional quality check would have caught this unit.

The unit more often than not also hangs after turning 6 blocks white on the boot screen.

I've emailed iRex to see what we can do about speeding up the turn time for a replacement of the replacement.

ouch. I guess that must be quite annoying to get the second replacement.

I believe iRex beats all bad first revisions i've seen to date. Well, Pinnacles first satellite tv card which couldn't produce a high enough "high" voltage to tune in certain transponders was quite funny, too. (Try to figure out why you can see nearly every channel, except rtl&co)

Good luck, anyway.

I got a prompt reply to my email and we'll be exchanging tracking numbers at dawn.

CommanderROR is evidently on their software beta team, I guess I'm now part of their hardware testing team.

I'm calm, I got my Samsung ZX20 today. 1.5Mbps into the palm of my hand has an amazing calming effect... and lunch with my wife was excellent. She's excited at all these excuses to have lunch. We may have to do this even after we get a working iLiad.

Scotty, I feel for you. I had the same situation. I did receive my 3rd device this past Tuesday and so far it seems to be working just fine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing crops up in the next few days

Less than 24 hours after receiving it the latest iLiad is on its way back to Germany. I dropped it off at Office Depot's UPS Store with Karel's email instructions on how to return it and three more copies of the commercial invoice for the last return.

The clerk looked at me like a deer suddenly caught by head lights but she processed the UPS form/paperwork, took the package and gave me a tracking number. INCO exworks is wonderful stuff.

If they do indeed ship the replacement tomorrow I should have the 3rd unit Monday Sep 11, 2006. An ominous date but hey, I could get lucky, I'm due a break about now.

Status, the 2nd dead iLiad is back in Germany but the automated customs clearance system wouldn't clear it. The system requested a human inspect the paper work. I guess even their computer can't believe I'd need to bounce a unit back for repair this many times.

iRex wrote me this morning to let me know that they've asked the "stock point" to ship me a new iLiad but it probably will ship Monday.

In the latest chapter of my continuing saga to finish "Unto the Breach" by John Ringo we find our plucky protagonist in receipt of a fresh email from the "stock point" in Germany.

Although I had visions in my sleep last night of an aryan technician with compelling blue eyes that spoke of quiet technical competence steadily going through boxes of iLiad's, carefully opening each box, plugging in one iLiad after another to check that they work, putting questionable units on a rather large stack next to a hazmat recycling dumpster, then finally selecting one unit for more careful inspection, then putting it back in a box to send to me... I suddenly realize the blue in the technician's eyes is the blue in the cold hard light of a near autumn dawn that finds me sweating as I realize the big roulette wheel of chance was spun this evening in Germany and yet another factory sealed box was randomly selected by an unfeeling and likely heavily exploited developing world worker whom fate has washed up upon the distant shores of Germany to earn hard currency to send home to their family so they can buy food and clean water and that hastily and randomly selected iLiad is even now speeding its way to me for final Quality Assurance Inspection.

If this keeps up they'll probably have to have me ISO-9001 certified on their next audit.

Well got unit 3 today. Unit 3 would bounce up and down on the mass storage mode when connected to a Mac. I unplugged it from the Mac and plugged it into a Dell. Bouncy there too.

It won't stay up long enough to copy files into it.

I am speechless at this point. I can not comprehend how they could possibly have sent me three iLiad's and had each of them die in the first few hours, all with different failure modes.

That's just horrendous. I'm afraid to try plugging my 3rd unit into the pc now. I just copy stuff to the sd card and read from there. They obviously need to put some serious focus on quality control. I know that's the ultimate understatement!
