Polls here are never meant to be a "yea" or nay" feature.

They are a way to see what people are thinking, and can be started by anyone, on any subject.

I understand that polls can be started by anyone and I was not aiming my comment to you specifically. I'm just puzzled as to why the (apparent) reluctance to create an iPad sub-forum.....at least until all the traffic dies down. There seems to be an overwhelming desire to start one.

I cannot speak for those in charge, but I do know that a reorganisation of the forums, somewhat focussed on the device section, is currently being worked on. It may be, perhaps is likely, they want to settle that before they start a new subforum for any device. In the meantime, I know a mod has moved most (?) of the threads into this Apple iPhone forum to help with the "traffic" problem.

We have forums for netbooks and they are not 'dedicated reader' devices.

I see the iPad as magazine reader first and that to me, that alone, earns it a place in the forums as one of the first to do the task decently. And although the Pad might not be appropriate to some people, it will have iBooks, a place to buy books, just like the Sony Library.

Mobile Read is a site promoting portable reading in whatever format. The iPad is thus a worthy contender... when it comes out that is.

I see it just the other way around... There are literally hundreds of non-dedicated devices that can be used for reading. So why must the iPad get special treatment? What's wrong will keeping everything Apple in one forum? That's already better than what most manufacturers get.

The desire to start one is nice. However, there is a lot more involved than just typing out a nice forum title.

Alex, I'm sure, is listening, and weighing the pros and cons. As it is his forum, I trust his judgement.

He's done a pretty darn good job so far..........

Did you have a look at the demo of the iPad? If you did, it's pretty obvious that it would make a pretty good reading device, especially for the marginal book types such as magazines, manga, coffe table books and so on.

I'm a woodworker and read the trade magazines. We need the pictures in the how to explanation of procedures and furniture plans. So far there is no portable solution other than tablet computers. Those that exist are big and bulky and frankly, quite fragile and expensive. (the iPad is half those prices)

You seem to have a strong aversion to aPple, enough to blind you with hatred. I feel like it's all the objectivity that will ever come out of your discussion on the aPple subject...

And in the same sense there are other devices that are also very well suited for reading off of. Maybe not AS well, but close enough. Just see the other devices forum. And more devices are likely to come in the near future.

Actually I love Mac computers. I still have, and occasionally use my Performa 5215CD. These days I use Windows, reluctantly, only because that's where most of the software support is. What I hate, or at least dislike, is the culture that has developed around Apple in recent years. I'm sorry, but I feel like there is just this aura of arrogance surrounding the fandom. Like iProducts should automatically be held in a much higher regard.

And as I said, Apple users already have a forum on this site. What is the problem with renaming this one so it encompasses the iPad too?

I think it should be the other way around because the iPad will be aPple's 'flagship' to the reading public. All other aPple reading devices will be considered marginal satellite devices.

I am relieved that while you often bash aPple you still have in your possession a remnant of one of their devices. I've gotten rid of all but a few iPods because all were too old or broken without possible way of repair. Just try to find a 20 megabyte aPple hard drive! ...And I have not bought other computing devices of aPple's because of personnally imposed budgetary constraints. The aPple culture you speak of is an illusion, a simple marketing tool, just as silly as the name brands of the various devices they offer. No one is obliged to live by it. I wish to submit my son as an example. He's an aPple company hater but he swears by his iPod Touch and is using it to remote control his Windows machines. I'll just say that the coming iPad has him groaning and muttering alone quite a bit!
For me, as a cabinet maker, I value the use of good tools as a means to productivity and go for the best of them immediately, no time to lose. This iPad will be a great reading, drawing, web browsing, video and presentation tool, even in first gen.. I will still use my Sony for books but finally, I'll have a magazine and papers reader...

Oh, and for others out there with the 'iPhone Software Limited' argument, there is a lot of software conception on the way. The iPhone software use is temporary...

A most interesting statement. As a forum administrator myself (elsewhere), that's about all it takes to add a sub-forum...so I would find it very useful and helpful to understand what's involved here on mobileread that makes it more difficult.

Which is why there should be a subforum for any and all tablet devices. And one for PCs/Laptops/Netbooks (to discuss the various e-book programs on them).

And there should be one Sony forum to discuss all Sony readers, One Amazon forum for all Kindle models etc. Not counting different language areas.

Way too much clutter in forums here with having a different forum for each reader. It's an e-reader site, so give a forum area by manufacturer for dedicated e-reader making companies. And have broader areas for tablets and PCs/laptops since there seems to be less interest in them. Maybe Apple could have it's own area for iPad/iPhone/iTouch reading discussion if interest warrants it.

But one forum per device is absurd. Navigating the forum list drop down is a nightmare with so many areas.

Jeff, the most difficult part is not the mouse click it needs to add a subforum, but to consider carefully what the current and future needs are most likely going to be in our community.

Your comments are very appreciated though, and we agree that the iPad deserves its dedicated space here along with the iPod and the iPhone, both very capable for reading e-book as well.

Following this discussion what we decided to do is turn this section into a dedicated place for Apple devices, with optional prefixes that allow you can denote the device you're discussing. This is analogous to how we've done it in the new Sony Reader section, where devices with different hardware share similar software.
