Okay, I'll go remove any comments which are off-topic in those threads now then. Posting guidelines and all. Ah well, them's the rules.

From what I read so far, the iPad is more like the iPhone or Touch than unlike the iPhone. Runs the same apps, scaled up to fit, right? Sure it'll have new apps that only apply to the larger screen but the suggestion above about using an i-OS major heading, maybe split into two sub-forums, makes sense to me.

It's basically an iPod touch with a faster CPU and a bigger screen. And more expensive accessories.

iLiseuse, can we call it that?

In the interests of peace the term "iLiseuse" has been added to the Governor's State University Abridged Unabridged Dictionary of United Nations Approved Peace-keeping Terminology to refer to any and all electronic reading-capable devices (an amendment to add "-ish"--as in "iLiseuse-ish"--is being considered to refer to all non-dedicated devices such as the iPad, netbooks, or hacked cash registers, for example, under strong opposition from the Belgians). No user action is necessary to add this to your lexicons: Sony has agreed to rootkit all word-processing programs via iTunes and Amazon downloads to cause them to auto-correct all instances of "eReader", "iPad", "e-Ink", or the like (Sony Reader is exempted from this program, for entirely legitimate reasons).

Seriously, I'm glad to see the threads have been moved. It was starting to feel less like "News & Commentary" and more like "The Spanish Civil War" in here.

I have to say, that lumping the iPad and the iPhone in one section is a pretty poorly thought out decision.

One is a phone, on which admittedly you can read.

The iPad is supposed to be A READER, as well as other things.

Most likely, the reader applications on the two will diverge, because of the different sizes. Kind of silly, to have Kindle 2 and Kindle DX, but not iPhone and iPad....

Really? I thought only maker of iPad created its own e-book selling site, made contracts with many top US publishers, and put lots of money into advertising that fact. I'll have to research the e-book stores of all those other netbooks makers... what was I missing?

That we don't know yet if it's going to allow the App Store reader/store apps. If it does, then it's not much different from them, it just has one more app (iBooks) as well, or if it dosn't allow them and is hence a different animal.

Huh?

We already know, it will have a dedicated book store. We already know Apple has contracts with various publishers.

If the iPad doesn't allow book apps other than iBook, then it will be a proprietory reader no different than Amazon's or B&N's devices.

If it does allow other book apps, then it will be a reader with a broader range of sources.

But either way, it's a reader.

If there are sections for stuff like Ectaco jetBook and Fictionwise eBookwise, it'd be strange not to have a section for a reader which will in all likelihood be considerably more popular than both of these put together.

Well, no. It has everything prepared to buy books from the start. On any other netbook, you have to choose, buy and install the software yourself. It's a big difference in my opinion, so it makes iPad more of an eBook reader than any other netbook.

So if, say, Sony bundled it's reader software onto it's laptops... (does it?)
