Will that please everyone? Of course not. People accustomed to having 5-6 programs running at once, juggling them around, etc... are obviously not the target market.

But for those who work more like you, it is going to be THE way to interact with devices in the future. I can't wait to see how it all develops.
Having many programs running at once, only seems to me, IMHO, to avoid the startup time associated with the apps. I find on my ipod, I can easily hit the little button at the bottom, and launch an app so quickly, that it is virutally the same, and often it will still be where I left off, so it is a flase tradeoff in my opinion.

I also think the poster below hit the nail on the head. I envision using this when I am not at work, at work I have a full blown laptop (which incidentally I could do most of my job on an ipad, but that is a different story).

At home, I keep in touch via email, read articles, and other things I would like to do from my easy-chair, not hunched over a desk, which I do for 8 hours a day.

Also, I am hoping it will hold and display a lot of technical pdfs, which, while mainly used at work, I feel the urge to double-check on something I am thinking of while at home, but that would be too heavy of a stack to haul around, and again, I don't want to read them on a laptop.

If I could somehow hook in RSS to our Doc mgmt system to retrieve updated docs in our organization, it would be an added bonus.

Woo, thread necromancy.

The blogs and the like tore the iPad apart back in January before a few things happened:

1) It actually launched.
2) 3rd party apps were at least announced.
3) People got to actually play with it for the tasks they would use the device for.

The iPad is like the iPhone in how you use it, but it is like a laptop/desktop in that its about the 3rd party apps. Without compelling 3rd party apps, the product isn't going to go anywhere.

Can you type fast? I have yet to see a person type fast on an Ipad or any Tablet and I have seen a few try to do just that. I can have my netbook on my lap and in my bed, sofa and can type quite quickly... I don't see that ability... if it were I would be more interested....in any tablet....

If you need to type a lot of text with the iPad, the best way to do it is with a Bluetooth keyboard. The on-screen keyboard is fine for short emails, etc, but you really wouldn't want to write a novel on it. You can have the best of both worlds - the portability of a tablet, and a "proper" keyboard for those occasions when you need it.

i can type decently on the ipads soft keyboard, am doing so right now, especially in landscape mode. but as Harry suggests, for long typing sessions a BT keyboard is great. I picked up apple's for about $60. it is very small, very lightweight, and extremely portable. I use it when I am going t be sending out a few emails to folk mostly. what I found ver nice about using it is it allows me to put the screen at any distance and angle from my eyes and the keyboard at any comfortable position under my fingers. they keyboard propped up on my lap and the iPad propped up on a pillow next to me for example. can't do that, easily, with a laptop.

Another plus one for the Apple's bluetooth keyboard combined with the iPad. If you are a touch typist with large amounts of text to write - it is the only way to go. They work really well together and you get to use the iPad in portrait or landscape mode with it.

You can touch type on the screen keyboard but I found I had a lot more typos and was more tiring (gradually getting better though).

and one thing i wouldn't advise is the keyboard+docking stand. if you really need a dock, then get the apple dock and the BT keyboard so you have some freedom. a few bucks more, but it is worth it.

also, the BT keyboard is in no way specific to the ipad, you can use it with any computer with bluetooth. just pair and go. you'll also be able to use it with iOS 4.0, i know it can be used on the iphone 4, i'm guessing it will work on the previous models as well. no reason it shouldn't.

It does work on the 3GS. Should work on the 3G too, I would imagine.

For extended typing sessions on the iPad, I use an old Think Outside BT keyboard I originally bought to use with a Dell Axim. It's great - it's a full-size keyboard, but folds up very compactly for travel and has a little built-in stand that can prop up the iPad in either portrait or landscape. Sadly, they don't make it anymore, but I'd recommend checking eBay if the Apple keyboard doesn't do it for you for some reason.

along with the keyboard engadget reported a leak on the apple magic trackpad. if this works with the ipad it will be a great portable workstation for me. sure looks real, wish apple would release it.
