Further to my post above a about the Washington DC public library e-collection, I made it to DC last week and visited the Library. The Great News is that the DC public library only charges $20 a year for non-resident library cards. Their e-collection is very large and they acquire lots of new releases. You can get an account and temporary card number online, but must show up at one of the branches within 30 days of online registration in order to show your drivers license and pick up your card and permanent card number. Note that you loose the books in your wish list when the permanent number is issued.

The DC elibrary is my library of choice. If you live in the Northern VA, Maryland, DC metro area - the library card is free. Just show up at any library with drivers license in hand.

I currerntly have 10 books from DC library and 10 from Fairfax County on my reader. I'm set for a while. Even though the books expire after 21 days, you can still read them as long as you do not connect your reader to the computer.

Edit: The above method only worked for a book you are currently reading. It allows you to complete the book as long as you do not close it. When it is closed the book will expire.

1200+ fiction, not so many non-fiction, have had a good browse and borrowed my first titles as a test. Certainly suits my tastes, but of course I'm probably weird!
Have sent my feedback, mostly positive, to library services.

1,200 is a very good start. Are they mostly, if not all, epub?

They are nearly all epub (1,015 fiction titles), a few .pdf (236) so some overlap with both available

I've suggested to the London Borough of Hounslow to join the London Libraries Consortium, which is about 8 London boroughs offering Overdrive content. The next door borough, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, has joined up, so if Hounslow don't get a shift on, I might have to persuade my mum to join as she lives in their catchment area
