Right. At this point anything past 'If we had a jailbroken device we could run a native book app if we had any native book apps' is speculation. Nothing wrong with speculation - it can be a fun exercise - I'm just suggesting a reality check, especially when making buying decisions.

I just hope one of the ebook app makers have jumped on the SDK and upped resolution and submitted it. how long can that take

Which is a whole 'nother different thing than reading it natively. I can trivially convert an .epub to a .mobi to read on my Kindle, but that doesn't mean the Kindle supports .epub.

Speaking as a software developer I would bet it will not take long at all to up resolution within your eReader app if you do not change core functionality. Of course some folks will have coded their app wrong and for those folks it will take a while.

http://blog.kobobooks.com/2010/01/27...kobo-is-ready/

Some on this forum are IMPLYING that Apple will be sneaky and won't get back to the app developer with the 'rejection slip' in a timely manner - at least that is how I read their posts.

So to answer the question about timeline - sixty days. It is an unavoidable sixty days because in sixty days you as an eBook App Developer will know that your company is part of the iPad launch, or you are not part of the launch. You will not even have to hear from Apple to know whether your app is there for the first customers, all you will have to do is purchase an iPad for yourself and check the iPad section of the App Store.

If you want to know when an App Developer will be ready then read the link I provided. Kobo thinks they will be ready within the next four weeks. I am going to presume they will submit their App to Apple when it is ready - so submission within the next six weeks?

I meant Apple can take months to work through a dialogue with you as to why they haven't approved an app. This isn't "sneaky", it's happened to a fair number of people.

iTunes allows you to import your own music, but will not allow you to play iTunes purchased stuff on non-iPods. But, there are workarounds that allow you to strip any DRM so you can play the iTunes stuff on other devices. So, one way or the other, your own books will work on the iPad, either through Apple's own app or through 3rd-party apps.

I have an iPhone and I use an app called GoodReader, which is absolutely fantastic. The iPad will run all iPhone apps, so the current version of GR should run on it, albeit in iPhone-sized screen. iPhone apps can be expanded to fill the screen but with jaggies, however I cannot see Apple refusing GR for iPad.

I also have an email account specific to my iPhone so that I can email myself a document and then retrieve it on the iPhone. The iPad's Mail application will support the following (from Apple's website):

Mail attachment support
Viewable document types: .jpg, .tiff, .gif (images); .doc and .docx (Microsoft Word); .htm and .html (web pages); .key (Keynote); .numbers (Numbers); .pages (Pages); .pdf (Preview and Adobe Acrobat); .ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint); .txt (text); .rtf (rich text format); .vcf (contact information); .xls and .xlsx (Microsoft Excel)

This is no longer true. All music you buy thru iTunes now will play on any device that can play AAC format (non-DRM). Movies are still DRMed.

That is what I am kinda excited about do you think Apple could force publishers to open their books? They managed it with music...

I kinda was hoping Amazon would take that first step-they got the music industry to sell MP3s for god's sake..not just DRM-free AAC, but plain old MP3s!!

I don't Amazon had to do much. That was the music industry trying to prevent Apple from controlling them. It didn't turn out to well for their plan. Who knows now maybe Apple will be Amazons Amazon... sorry just had to say it.

Oh come off it. EMI forced them to do it, as their propitiatory DRM for iBooks, along with all the past evidence, shows.

I recall on Apple's site seeing a statement about being able to sync the iPad to a computer. I'd think you'd be able to move your own content onto the iPad that way, and possibly move it off as well - can't you (with some effort) remove Kindle books purchased through the Kindle app off your iPhone?

If only I could remember where I left my TARDIS key...

I could hop into the future and find out whether Apple will block other ereading apps or not.

Until then, I'll guess we'll just have to say we don't know. There's really no reason to assume strongly either way. They have not indicated such.
