What worked for me was buying another e-reader and telling the wife it was being paid for with funds saved from not buying cigarettes. Now I can't go back!

Yes, it WILL pass - I quit via cold turkey after 42 years & 3 failed attempts to quit using patches. to my astonishment I felt really good after the third day, and much better on subsequent days.
Best bit: realising that I was completely over the physical addiction;
Worst bit: realising just how bad I must have smelt when I did smoke.

Interestingly, as someone else pointed out, it's the behaviour patterns that are more difficult to change.

Congrats and Good On Ya!!!! I'm going on 4 tobacco free years! here's a tip, start increasing your water consumption. it helps with the cravings, and here shortly you'll start hacking a lot of junk up. having the extra fluids will help a LOT!

As my wife mentioned earlier in this thread I screwed up once (one month smoke free as of this writing) and it wasn't because of the craving, it was just an old habit dying hard: When I get on the horn with family or get to talking shop (of the IT variety) it was an automatic thing; I went out on the porch and lit up. At work, about ten minutes before my break my brain expects...something. Right after I eat...well, that's kinda unavoidable

Get on here or your Facebook/Twitter/whatever account and do a post a day about how you went smoke-free for that day, even if it's only one sentence; it's a lot easier to stay off the leaf if you know the whole world's watching.

In my experience, the actual not-smoking part is easy; it's everything else that's hard. The proof is right here in my office; I have a box of the nicotine gum with only 4 or 5 pieces gone (out of 100) and a US$49 box of the level-two patches, with only 2 gone. I did on my own what modern medicine couldn't do for me.

Many times, when I get home from work, start something, and I forget to smoke... Going travelling - not smoking on the plane doesn't worry me... If I forget to take cigarettes to work, I go without, doesn't worry me...

When I can't afford to smoke anymore, I WILL give it up...
