The Amadeus Net

"The Amadeus Net" by Mark Rayner is an amazing end of the world book. I read it not too long ago, and it's quickly become one of my favorites.

Set in the year 2028, shortly after the destruction of half of the world’s population due to an asteroid-Earth collision (known as The Shudder), "The Amadeus Net" tells the story of love and survival in Ipolis, the man-made utopia dedicated to the preservation of art and scientific exploration. While Ipolis itself may appear to be paradise, the world around it is certainly not. Divided still by wealth, the world is put in danger of destruction by the religious fanatics of the poverty-stricken South, who give the North an ultimatum: Distribute wealth and resources fairly, or suffer global annihilation.

Beautifully written and riveting.

Saving Mankind is an armagedon book written in 2006 and it is at times eerily like the new movie 2012 but most of the time it just delivers a page burning story. It is by an unknown Aussie Author Don Stallman and is available as a DRM-free ePub for $2.95 at www.ZuluExpress.com. It is the first part of a trilogy, part 2 is due out later this year, I'm hanging out for it.

Sounds pretty interesting. Might have to give it a whirl. I am currently reading The Last Centurion by John Ringo which I am really enjoying. He has a certain flair to this writing (at least in The Last Centurion).

Not all end of the earth some more post apocalypse but I'll add:

Earth Abides by George R Stewart.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham.

There's a recent anthology of short fiction called Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse which has some great stories in it.

The Drowned World by J.G Ballard.

On the Beach by Nevil Shute.

The Windup Girl might also be considered post-apocalyptic. Although no nuclear war was waging, the world is now severely flooded and everything works with kinetic energy. A rather weird world, I'm just getting used to it.

Sounds nice, attempted to buy it, but the link they gave me back for the download results in a 0kb file. I tried to find contact info on the website (none that I could find) and resorted to email them to their Paypal account email ; hopefully it was just a glitch... Really want to read that one

EDIT : Done, it was an honest mistake, they've replaced the file on their servers and emailed me a copy ; Don (the author) also emailed me to make sure everything was okay

There are also a few good short stories out there about the end of the world. "The Nine Billion Names of God" by Arthur C. Clarke is one of the best ones.

I just read "Flood" and "Ark" by Stephen Baxter. Both very good end of the world type books. They're also available as ebooks.

The Year of the Flood by Atwood (it's sort of a companion novel to Oryx and Crake). If you enjoy graphic novels or would be willing to give them a try, have a look at Y the Last Man.
