Hi Barefoot!

I started using my Reader with Calibre before i even installed Sony Reader so i don't think it would be a problem if you uninstalled it. Cheers

Hello.

I am considering buying an ereader as well.

What i mainly want is something:

1) for reading books (no annotating or note taking)
2) reading feeds from google reader

What would you suggest The 300 series seems like a good deal, however i dont know if the screen is big enough to view feeds (with photos) from my google reader via calibre?

Would it be better to get 505 or 600?

Are the screens on those 2 just as good as 300 or worse?

Or would it be better to get the nook?

Thanks!

505 and 300 have the "best" screens. They are not touch, and therefore have less glare and a bit better contrast. The 505 would probably be the best because of the 1" larger screen, but they are getting hard to come by. I own the 300 and have no problems with it, but I do not do feeds.......Nook? I don't see what would be better, but it certainly would work...

Can you just download the books from the Sony store, onto your computer, with the Sony Software. And then transfer it to your 300 with Calibre?

I have looked at some of the free stuff on the Sony store, and was tempted (God help me) to install the Sony software to get it. I doubt I will actually do that, but if I had a $50 credit I would for sure temporarily install it.......

I cannot get the Sony Reader software to open, it worked until I bought a book, and now it won't open. I have tried everything, uninstall, reinstall, their support didn't help. HOWEVER, I do have it on my work computer, so I can buy the books there. If I do that, is it possible to download a book to the Reader without it automatically removing all the books that are already on it? The reader software on my work computer has no books on it yet.

If you can download to your work computer, copy the file onto a USB thumb drive (SD card or whatever). Take that to the home computer, import into Calibre and then put it on your reader.

I do not use DRM books (I strip it) but I do know the home computer and your reader will have to be "authorized" for the Adobe software for it to work. But other than downloading from the Sony store, there is no need for the Sony software......

But really, what a PITA..... good luck!

And since you have already put a book onto your reader from the store it should already be authorized....

600's screen won't be as good as the 300 or 505. If you're going to be loading RSS feeds, I don't think there'll be photos? If there are, greyscale won't show them nicely, except perhaps on the 900 which has 16 levels of greyscale, and even then its highly dependent on the amount of detail on the photo itself.

Whether to get a Sony or a Nook is really your preference. The price difference is pretty large, personally I wasn't able to justify paying the increased amount on features that do not really improve the reading experience.

Just my 2 cents~

You do get pictures in the RSS feeds that Calibre converts, depending on the source of the feed of course.
