Yeah, sure, a busybox date command breaks the nook.
Don't blame your misfortunes on it, it works fine for everybody else.

It's not the command which breaks the nook, it's the wrong argument, my nook was set to year 1970 and startup script were hanging indefinitely, so the nook wasn't booting any more. Beware of bad arguments ... I had to remove the battery for one night to reset the internal clock.

I warned that I wasn't sure where the seconds go. But then I keep forgetting that we live in the world where MacDonald's can be sued if they don't print in capital letters that coffee can be hot. The nookdevs wiki (thanks to :D ominic post here) has the better info.

At the end of the day, busybox date is a correct command which is much easier and better to use than what you suggested.

That's weird, I've had the busybox clock set to 1970 and nook was still booting up fine.

There must another thing went wrong.

The date command is only used to set system time, which means kernel time, not the hardware RTC. When you reboot the system, the system time is resetted to RTC. The only way to set the RTC ist the hwclock command. Therefore it's impossible to run into any problems, when only using the date command.

Bye, Dominik

hi guys,

I never used hwclock but my clock setup persisted multiple reboot

Stangri I take full responsability for my issues, I've done it all by myself. I posted a correction just to help others.

Non US user with rooted Nook

I have an idea to get the nook to register for non us users, however it requires a rooted nook. If anyone is interested, please contact me.

Just to be clear, do I need to register to use the nook outside of US for reading my own epubs and pdfs? Does the missing registration cause any problems? Can you skip the registration at all?

Also, I looked at BaN few minutes ago and for a basic account registration they don't seem to reguire adress or credit card number. Just name and email.

Thanks for a reply, with the yeasterday announcent of cheaper wifi only nook I am seriously considering getting it as a friend of my flies to the US in a few days. I live in Europe.

@Rantreg since firmware 1.2 you could register your nook anywhere in the world via wi-fi. I'm in Australia and have no problems and if you do not want to register your nook yes you still can read epubs you just won't get firmware updates automatically.

I created an account with B&N using my Aust credit card but I gave a US address, when I'm using my PC I use hotspot shield and buy books as per normal and my nook can download them via wi-fi..

I would recommend buying the nook...

For a tutorial on how to buy the Nook from outside the US and download books from B&N though US Unlocked, look here: https://www.usunlocked.com/blog/?p=348
