Can you override the margins, the justification, and the font if they are specifically specified in the CSS?

Fantastic choice. Sony PRS-505 IS still the best.

Best contrast, hardware quality, user interface, and also the best in privacy (no wireless connectivity snooping).

The default font in ADE does not support Cyrillic. This can be solved with embedded fonts or with user fonts in the Cybooks. There is a Russian version in my Divine Comedy ePUB edition.

The main criterion is security. That's simply ridiculous! And it leads to the absurd conclusion that the best is a reader that is no longer produced. And why a Russian site for all this? And how is a Russian to appreciate wireless capabilities? I agree with another poster on this thread that if one company deserves major credit, it is Amazon, since it is Amazon that put ebooks on the map. I think it's wonderful that there are so many readers out there: competition will lead to improvements. I don't care that one is the "best": I care only that the one I have (the Kindle global wireless) suits my purposes. Yes, I would like it to have zoom capabilities (for the pdf files) and folders, but I'm doing just fine with it as it is.

Not Sony? Who actually made the very first eInk based ebook reader when amazon was still in its infancy?

Please do remember that the rating is based mostly on preferences of peoples living in Russia, Ukraine and neighbouring countries. And even if we can by Kindle (from eBay etc.), we cannot use it at full power - no wireless connection, useless keyboard etc. The same for Cybook - it is no way to buy it easily. Peoples mostly do not want to order something from abroad. As for Sony 505, lots of them were sold here, popular russian book collections were released on torrents (already in .lrf format), and the brand Sony is very powerful for our peoples.

I did not say that Amazon was the first, Sony was, but until Amazon entered the field, ebooks were a small niche in the market. It's only on the entry of Amazon that publishers (and the public) began to pay attention. I remember going to Borders, where there were Sony displays, before the introduction of the Kindle and even the clerks had no idea what they were selling.

Torbich, ясно что для нас в США эта оценка не убедительна.

Why not security? Different features matter to different readers.

As for why a Russian site, my answer is why not? And I'm sure a Russian can appreciate wireless capabilities as well as anyone else.

All the poll shows is which device serves the needs of the people surveyed the best of those which have been available in 2009. While the PRS-505 is no longer available, it was available for much of the year.

I may be biased (I do own a 505) but as of right now I can't find a single 6" device that is significantly better for my needs than the PRS-505. Not saying other devices don't meet other people's needs better, but the 505 meets mine.

Let me ask you a question: how is the 505 more secure than the Kindle? Because it lacks wireless? What bothers me here is that the Kindle is on this list, but its wireless feature cannot be used by a Russian. I am glad you like your 505 as I do my Kindle, but if you are going to compare the devices, then you must be able to use both.

I'll admit that security wasn't my biggest feature, but I'll try to answer the question anyway.

Amazon does sell the Kindle in Russia, with wireless downloads enabled, so Russians can certainly use both devices to their fullest. As for security, the Kindle is designed to upload logs to a central server and also allows remote access via wireless, which the Sony does not. In particular, Amazon can push out firmware updates over wireless, and the Sony requires manual firmware updates.

That's ignoring things like remote deletion whenever the wireless is turned on and the fact that the K2 has no expandable memory support. If you really want to control content on your Sony and don't trust their software, you can always sneakernet things onto the device via a memory card.

I think it must be. If you took a similar poll in the US results would be a lot different I would assume.

Please remember, that Amazon started selling officially Kindle in Russia only in the end of October. And 2 months isn't enough to become popular. There are more reasons. F.ex. wireless is more or less useless - most peoples want to read russian books, not english books.
