The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. Read Cryptonomicon a while back and this was just as good. For 2010 I'm going to read through his Baroque Cycle. Found some nice signed first editions.

That reminds me, I've been planning to buy Anathem for a while, maybe I should do it now that the price has gone under $10 The Baroque Cycle is my favorite work so far by Stephenson, but probably that has a lot to do with the subject matter. I am fascinated by this time period when the modern conceptions of science started to emerge. These books are one reason why I'm reading a biography of Louis XIV now.

Also, I wonder if I can change my vote? After all, 2009 isn't over yet. I just finished The Master and Margarita and was just a tiny bit disappointed by the end, so I'm wondering if I should vote for Amos Oz's Touch the Water, Touch the Wind instead. Oh well, both are beautiful books, so I guess I'll just vote for both.

This is not voting or a poll or any such thing so yeah you can change. I just wanted to get any idea of what everyone thought best. Somewhat selfishly so I can add them to my to-be-read list.

I think I would have to go with World Without End for 2009.

I guess I'll say: The Lord of the Rings

Sad to say that I'm in my mid-30's and never read it before.

The past is a deep mine:

For sf, IMO:
Best sci-fi novel of all time: Zelazny, Roger, "Lord of Light"
Best fantasy novel of all time: Stewart, Sean, "Clouds End"
Best medium length work OAT: Moore, C.L., "No Woman Born"
Best short work OAT: Sturgeon, Theodore, "Slow Sculpture"

"Clouds End" is the newest, and "No Woman Born" the oldest.

YMMV.

Since the thread title limits the past to books read in 2009. The past isn't that deep of a mine. So you read these books in 2009? I mean we wouldn't want to veer off track, would we?

My favorite reads of 2009 are:

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold - A touching look at one girl's view of her family and life after she dies.
The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison - A thoroughly enjoyable slapstick paranormal urban fantasy series.
Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke - A classic hard science fiction story about exploration and discovery.

Other enjoyable reads for 2009:

Ringworld Series by Larry Niven
Riley Jensen Series by Keri Arthur
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach

"Shogun" by James Clavell! No question about that! It's the best book I read every year!

Also Pillars of the Earth and World without End made me realize I'll have to re-read them several times too!

If I go by the ratings I gave the books on LibraryThing the following got 4.5:

The Lens
Old Man's War
Neptunes Crossing
The Pillars Of The Earth

I think if I picked 1 it would be The Pillars of the Earth.

For me, the best reads were "The Girl Who.....' trilogy by Stieg Larsson.
'The Lost Symbol' by Dan Brown and 'Millenium' by Tom Holland.

Cheers.
