You shouldn't fret so much. Yes, e-ink is vastly overrated, but it's not all that bad. I've been labeled the "anti-e-ink guy" here before and even I don't want to go to extremes to describe it that way.

On my somewhat more realistic scale, if 1 is completely unreadable and 10 is a good trade paperback or hardcover with good paper/printing, I'd give vanilla e-ink Vizplex a solid 6. I'd give the slightly inferior touchscreen ones more like a 5.5.

If you work with it enough, you can pretty easily lower your standards to the point where using it isn't quite so offensive. So don't lose hope completely. If you've relied on hype and stuff to convince you to get a device, it's easy to be disappointed at first.

It's the annotation that's the "killer" feature of the 600 for me. That's what I use constantly.

At least Sony learned from the 700 and ditched the built-in side-lighting. That made the screen ridiculously hard to read. The 600 is still not as crisp as the 505, which is a shame, but right now Sony is still the best competitor to Amazon in the hardware department, it seems... and they are getting better in the content department as time goes on.

I don't disagree with this at all, very well said. I'm actually at the point now where I read so much on mass market paperbacks and eink that trade paperbacks and hardcovers are almost uncomfortable to my eyes, but that's just what I'm used to. Eink was such an easy transition since the background isn't much off from a mass market.

Gawd only knows.

And the color part of a nook is a separate screen area, not part of the display - the display is exactly the same as all the other 6" eInk displays.
