I was very happy with my Kindle 1, and now very happy with my Kindle 2 (the Kindle 1 now belongs to my husband, who renamed it "librum mirabilum" which means "miraculous to read" in Latin. (Any misspellings are my fault; I don't speak latin so I don't retain its spellings very well).)
Anyway. Those 1 star reviews on Amazon are mostly fossils that date back to the Kindle's first release--from people who hate the idea of books you can't sniff or a few more sophisticated people who hate DRM, but who had, for the most part, never laid a finger on a Kindle and didn't have the faintest idea whether it did its job well or not. Once you think the DRM issue over, check for reviews by people who actually own it--I find those are more helpful when it comes to trying to figure out whether a product will work for me. |

I've had my K1 for a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. The only irk I have is that the K2 just got PDF support. I wondered when the the K1 would get the update. I have quite a few books on PDF and I would love to read them on my kindle...

@Stevo: The PDF support is very basic and you aren't missing out much. There's no zoom feature for example - it fits to width. It's okay for PDFs you generate yourself.
Kindle 2 pro et contra: PRO: Dictionary (I could even add a translation dictionary) Easy note-taking (a physical keyboard works much better for me than an on-screen) Wikipedia lookup (I've always looked up stuff I read about - this makes it even easier) Good ergonomics (weight, button placement, holding it) CON: Few native book formats PDF support is very basic I can only buy it from USA, which added ~$80-90 in taxes and fees to import It's a great device for non-techies ... if they live in USA. Added download fees, plus being locked into an American bookstore makes this the ebook reader I would not recommend to, for example, my mother. |

@Ea: Thanks for the info! From what I've been reading here, you're right about the PDF support. I can try to convert try PDF's through Calibre (which is awesome!)or I can e-mail them to Amazon (I completely forgot about that one).

![]() ![]() ![]() For those who are humor-challenged, I'm absolutely LOVING my K2! Beats the heck out of the PRS, Cybook, BeBook, and I'm willing to bet that it beats out the Nook for features and ease of use as well. ![]() Derek |

In all seriousness, though, it really isn't a "this device beats that device" thing, or it shouldn't be. Everyone has different needs/wants (it'd be a pretty boring world otherwise, don't y'all think?), and therefore what's great to one person may not be so great for the next. But all the device bashing gets OLD, quick. Just because it's perfect for you, doesn't mean it's going to be perfect for everyone, or even anyone else. /jumps off soapbox. |
