Just rang them and thanked them!

Just used it again, a bar dropped. 1 bar in two or three days?
I spoke to the people at Laredo Customer Satisfaction (toll free number via Skype) to thank them They repeatedly got my work number confused with some person named Charles... took three repetitions to get my work number across! I mentioned the memory stick sometimes taking a while to be recognised when plugged in. (No, I'm not expecting a crack force of Sony programmers to jump on it; at least it's being recognised!)
I mentioned the time taken to discharged and they stated it was working.
I thanked them profusely for sending me my Reader back upgraded

You didn't connect it to your PC/Mac over the last 2-3 days, did you?

I did, but very briefly indeed (upload a Calibre newsfeed). No time given for recharging.

@AprilHare,
How much costs did you make totally for the upgrade? Did you only have to pay for sending the 500 to them or also for the return?

Personally I think I will not upgrade, you had a lot of hassle to get it arranged. Yesterday I did some testing removing DRM from ePUB and converting it to LRF, and that works fine.

When I called Sony to find out about the 500, I did use the toll-free line and got a very helpful person. Told me that the 500 was being worked on and would be sent back the next day. And it arrived right on schedule.

The fact that Sony offers even a 'for-fee' upgrade to the PRS-500 is really swaying me to buy one of the new eReaders (600 or 900) instead of a Kindle or Nook. It makes me think they will consider supporting their product deeper in its lifecycle than either of the other two are willing to do.

The only cost was transporting it to the US via post.

Good to know, but luckily for me the ordeal is over.

Yep, this is a good reason. I've had to discount the 900 and the Nook (their cellular support to my knowledge is useless in Australia - and AFAIK the Nook wi-fi only works with the B&N store which I can't use in Australia either).

My PRS500 just came in about an hour ago and I love it so far. It reformats PDFs so well I really didn't know what to expect for the reflow but it works very very well for my needs. For a device that has been collecting dust because I couldn't use it for the pdf files that I had, its going to now be secondly most used device after my DR1000S and my Iliad will be collecting dust. I used to love the PRS500 because of its small size (screen sharpness isn't quite as nice as my Irex's though) but once the things I was reading shifted to be more PDF based stuff from word documents my PRS500 just lost all its mojo but its back!

I have to admit with Sony doing something like this, offering a free upgrade, they move to the top of my list of companies I would buy another eink device from. The main fear with eReaders is that the device will become obsolete and Sony went above and beyond the call of duty to hook their customers up . The one downside is that I blame Sony for ruining the chances of me going outside for the weekend as I'm so excited to start reading books on this thing again I'm not sure I'll be able to move from my chair. I just hope I have enough food in my fridge to last me through.

And the turnaround time was amazing, I sent it out last Thursday and got it back today. They actually mailed it out on Wednesday but missed the cut off time for next day so it took an extra day, that's about 4 business days to do an upgrade, pretty sweet.

Great job Sony

Did anybody else try to send a PRS500 to Sony from outside the US? (No, Canada seems not to be outside the US, it is more side by side ) Anybody with success from the EU?

I am not sure wether I should send mine from Germany to Sony in the States or not...

I'm wondering the same thing, but before try to send my PRS-500 to USA I've contacted the customer service in Spain, just in case...

If they tell me it's not possible to update the device here, then I'll try on USA... or may be not... With the shipment time to there and back I could pass weeks without my reader, in addition to the risk of getting it lost.

I don't think so. If that were possible they would have put it on the web for download, as they did with the previous updates for PRS-500 and PRS-505.

It seems like the new firmware exceeds the device's EPROM capacity and they have to add or replace a chip. Just a thought though.

Please let me know, what customer service in Spain told you. Seems I have to try to contact the german customer service center...

Btw. do I have to pay importation VAT if I send my device to the States (Texas, Laredo)? I mean, it is a support case, I do not want to sell the device.

Prs-500 battery fix

"A resolution is available to correct the battery meter functionality. To resolve this issue, download and install the Sony® Reader (PRS-500) System Update available at the Sony PC Support Web site."

This was an answer to my recent inquiries on the battery not being as efficient after the 500 upgrade....
