Can I just say that I love the moderators here? They do a great job of keeping the discourse here generally friendly and helpful, and they aren't shy about showing trolls the door! Y'all do a great job and I for one appreciate it!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course--I realize that some people want "words-in-a-row" from their e-book readers and don't like having other capabilities cluttering things up.

But for me, cross-document search, and highlighting and annotation are important parts of how I use my e-book reader, and the user-replaceable battery and SD card provide important opportunities to extend its useability.

So if I were making a "Kindle 3 wishlist" those items would be on it. That's all.

My prediction is that the next Kindle will be a touch screen version, but one done right--no glare. It will also probably have a slightly better eink screen.

This wouldn't be enough for me to upgrade from the DX, however, unless I could somehow resell the DX for a substantial sum so that the price difference would be less than $100.

I agree with markbot, it's going to be a touch screen for sure. Corporations like to keep up with competitors trends so they would be watching the nook and sony touch screen implementations closely.

Touch screen dosn't matter to me so much on a reading device though, because they are so simple. It's better turning a page with a button rather than touching the screen because the hand on the screen obscures words (one of the problems with reading on an iphone).

My opinion (with no factual support) is that the Kindle 3 will have a color screen, will have a better file system, and will support more ebook formats. A touch screen? Perhaps. I'd be quite surprised if Amazon isn't talking with PixelQi.

As a previous poster said, I really don't see a new Kindle coming out so soon after the international version was released. Late 2010 is plausible to me, but I could see them extending that into early 2011.

I have a feeling we wont see a new Kindle till color e-ink comes out. Hopefully they will have figured out the touch screen issues by then as well but I do not think its really a big of an issue with people as many think. Sony has had it now for more then a year and its not like its turned into the best selling ebook reader.

oh! I hadn't thought of touch screen for page turns, I don't particularly want touch screen anyway, but really and seriously not for page turns!

I think there is so much more that can be worked on before color screens are the issue

I think you are wrong about the color screen being the next big thing, and once again really do not look forward to touch screens

I know that "touch screen" is all the rave in gadgetry.....but I hate the idea for an ereader. Maybe it's just the obsessive compulsive in me, but fingerprints all over my reading screen makes me want to scream. What is wrong with buttons? That's why I won't buy a Nook, regardless of whether they fix the slowness issues. I couldn't stand having a touchscreen interface that is constantly covered in fingerprints. I'd find that extremely distracting while reading. I would much rather see efforts spent making the Kindle form factor more similar to cell phones that have pop-out keyboards. This way the keyboard is hidden until needed which makes the unit smaller but still allows for easy control of searches and notating. Maybe that's stretching it, but I'd rather see those types of innovations than adding a fingerprint hoarding LCD that kills battery life.

I like that idea. I have a preference for a physical keyboard over a virtual one (I bought a Pre over an iPhone). As long as I can access it easily, having it hidden away works for me as well.

Is there a reason when you search Google for Kindle 3 that you get a sponsored link at the top that says:

Kindle 3 at Amazon.com Sponsored Link
Amazon.com Buy kindle 3 at Amazon! Order by Dec 18- Get it by Xmas

When you click on the link it just takes to to a list containing the current Kindle, DX and some accessories. Are they just playing off people's curiosity and/or bad searches to drive them to the current Kindles?

I obsessively wipe my screen and it isn't even a touch screen, so I really get where you are coming from! However, I love the idea of taking notes with a stylus, and I imagine the next reader I buy will have that sort of ability and also a larger screen (I really like the size of the DX screen). I was never into the habit of writing notes in novels so I thought that I really wouldn't need note-taking ability in my reader. Now I find that I do put a lot of stuff that I am translating onto my reader and some of it is in foreign script so a keyboard wouldn't cut it for note-taking. I write my translations in a notebook as I read off of the screen, but I would really like to be able to make a note here and there directly onto the text.

Same. I really need something with that ability if I'm ever going to switch over to e-versions of academic books and articles.

For a leisure reader, I don't need that feature as, like you, I never mark up that stuff. So I'm fine with the K1 on that front for the foreseeable future.

Just need something with a big screen, stylus for note taking, and ideally color, for my academic work. Though I'm more interested in a tablet device than a sheer reader device for that purpose--along with magazines etc. which need a bigger screen and color.

I think it will be. I dont think its importent for people already using it. I am sure there are some more thing that will be added to the Kindle before a color screen. I do no think Amazon will make a new Kindle though before they move to color. Color is the last problem for the masses (well besides video but that really is just silly). Every time I talk to people about ebook readers I get the same response which always is "I will get one of those things when they have color". I also do not think it is really needed just lost really want it. Plus its the only reason they would really need to update the Kindle.

Oh and touch screens they are just a fad.
