This is the one I have ... free and well formatted. This is a non-abridged version.

EDIT: Actually this version has a space between each paragraph, which drives me nuts when reading fiction. I remember now, I read a hardback version of this book. Sorry.

I have these translated ebook editions:

1) Norman Denny
2) Christine Donougher
3) Isabel F. Hapgood
4) Julie Rose
5) Charles E. Wilbour

Wilbour is the granddaddy of them all. This was free.
Hapgood entered the fray in 1887. This was free.
Julie Rose is too colloquial for my tastes; nevertheless, this one is highly admired.
Norman Denny is popular because of the new cover touting the film.
Christine Donougher is the one I picked up for 99 cents, and the one I'm currently reading.

Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee.

What is your opinion on the Donougher translation, so far?

I'm really enjoying it. I highly recommend it.

I am, however, no scholar or expert of literature from that period.

While we are on the topic of Victor Hugo

Recently there was a survey, I think it was amongst French authors. It was Victor Hugo who was perceived as being the "French National Author."

Something to do with incarnating the French experience.

I've included the article from Magazine Littéraire. It's a really good magazine. It's one of my best friends. I can subscribe, even if I live in Australia. Helps with the isolation.

I thought the national author would have been Proust. They are always banging on about him in Mag-Litt.

Really darlings, you need to learn French. Life is better in the Francophone sphere.
