Can you convert Kindle ebooks to Sony? - Page 3

Please understand that I am not saying any of you are "wrong". But, even if it says "it is a crime to remove the DRM from an ebook", I really see it as being just an intimidation tool. Very often "bad laws" are not gotten rid of, but are simply not enforced. For example the infamous "sodomy laws" that many states had up unto a few years ago. Or the laws that warn you on the tags on your mattress. There are plenty of laws that are just winked at.

The reality is Amazon does not really care that I bought a book from them, stripped the DRM and read it on my PRS-300. They got a sale, and will perhaps get more. They would care if I stripped the DRM, and then sold copies for $1 on ebay. I think common sense on these matters is stronger than "the law".

I usually say that stripping DRM is probably legal in the US, because format shifting is generally considered a fair use but the DMCA does say that removing DRM is not allowed in most circumstances. As a practical matter, this issue is never going to be resolved because no one is going to be sued over stripping DRM from an ebook they paid money for when their only purpose is personal use.

I also fully agree that Amazon will not care if it is done for personal use. However, that does not change what the law is. Therefore, I neither recommend to others to strip DRM, nor admit on public forums that I do it.

I also agree common sense is important.

True and I'm a firm believer in being able to do what you want for your own usage with a product you purchase. That why I see nothing wrong with stripping drm and reading it on whatever device you want. Where I have a problem is if copies are made of that product and shared or sold to others.
