No zoom option in Kindle DX? MR's wiki has no info about Kindle DX to confirm.

And it only has 8 gray scales? The Kindle 2 has 16, are you saying Kindle DX's screen is inferior? I was assuming it was the same tecnology, but larger screen and maybe some software differences...

Amazon's website says the DX has 16 gray scales.

I've been waiting to see what the competitors will bring to the table next year, but except Aztak, they all are aiming for the business market. That translates to "more expensive". If I consider that Aztak is USA based and that means I'll have to pay an extra 40% at customs if I import it, the price ceased to be the main factor in my decision.

Most people are giving favourable opinions about the eReader, although considering it far from perfect. I've alread read some threads here about unhappy costumers too... So that makes me tremble before making the decision to splash 700€ + 50€ (cover) + S&H.

The DR800 is around the corner, so maybe I don't really need the 10,2" screen... But 8" seems small to me, considering that my main purposefor a new ereader is to read some image heavy PDFs and, not less important, read comics books/manga. What do you think? I know there's some iLiad owners here, so you might have a better idea about what would be better: 8" or 10,2"? DR800 or DR1000?

I've also heard that the latest firmware (1.7) is giving problems. Are they solved with the 1.7.1 patch?

Also, how's battery life, after one year of development?

Finally, for DS1000s owners... What's your honest opinion about it, months after buying it?

Thank you for any answers and opinons you might share with me.

PS: Oh, is there any rumour about a possible price drop? I would hate to buy it now and see it cheaper in Christmas. :S
Instead of ASTAK units from the US you can order BeBook from the Netherlands and various other European sources. It's the same units, even firmwares are interchangeable.

If that's so, then the DR and the DX have same grey-scale capabilities, so that's not a factor. My apologies for the misinformation.

Thanks for the clarification.

I've visited the site and this time I've watched the videos. There shows dictionary lookup. I assume Harry was refering to PDFs only, right? Even so, Amazon's ad is misleading.

I could be wrong, but I think it only works on Kindle books, not PDFs.

That's the confirmation I'm waiting, after hearing about Jinke's A9. Although A9 will have a smaller screen (9.1" agains't 9.7").

And let me guess... The newspapers and magazines are in PDF format...

At least we can use bookmarks with PDFs, right? And there's a "go to X page" option, yes?

Just to followup, according to the DX User Guide both Dictionary Lookup and Annotation say "(except for PDF)" next to them.

They seem to group bookmarks under Annotation, which is not available on PDFs. I don't know if there is another type of bookmark that is different.

Here's the User's Guide if you wanted to look.

Hi,
I've been following CUE for some time due to obvious reasons. I am an owner of a DR1000S, and if you check my messages on the forum, you'll read about the issues I've had. DR1000S is an expensive device, and the videos I've seen from the Las Vegas event are impressive. They say that the shipping will start around April, and that is probably only for USA.
I would say that my experience shows that DR1000S has issues which would justify waiting for alternative upcoming devices. Even if it is not e-ink, apple's rumoured tablet is another one I'm watching for (though quite unlikely to be a replacement for e-ink devices).
Wait a little bit unless you have lots of money to spend

Are you referring to the Plastic Logic "Que"?

Hi Everyone:

I am really impressed with the level of knowledge of most of the Mobile Read forum members here. A few people could even earn the title “expert”. That is why I know this is the right place for finding answers. Why not share what you have learned by writing a review or article about the iRex Digital Reader 1000S?

Our e-Reader page is looking for twenty more reviews on all the popular models so we could use your help. You can find reviews & more on the Kindle 2, Kindle DX, Nook, Sony Pocket, eSlick & Pocketbook 360: http://bit.ly/6fvuf1

For the last month or so, I've been dealing with a half dead DR1000S. I've written in another thread what I've been going through. On top of random software bugs which are not easy to reproduce, I now seem to have random hardware bugs, popping up every once in a while.
I'll check if Irex will accept to fix this thing under the warranty. It has been more than a year since I bought it, so if they say no, there is no way I am spending another dime for this device. To be honest, even if they fix it for me, I still can't say I got to use the device to the full extend I expected to do. The full extend here means the device working as advertised
According to other messages in this forum, people usually had better luck than me, and I'm glad that at least someone is enjoying their readers.
I'm a PhD student with lots and lots of stuff to read and to annotate. I was on my way to tube today, thinking about Kindle DX. Plastic logic device also looks good, but with earliest deliveries being available in April and only in USA make it a little bit too distant(?) for me.
My personal experience so far makes it hard for me to recommend DR1000S.

Kind regards
Seref
