that is the first thought that came into my mind when i saw this thread, as well. i always had more sympathy for him than for the other characters in that book.

For me the perfect anti-heroes are FitzChivalry from the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb and Nevare Burvelle from the Soldier Son trilogy. Even though they're the main characters, there's just no end to their misfortune in these series.

I serendipitously ran across this quote I'd saved:
"Acts and their consequences are the things by which our fellows judge us. Anything else, and all that you get is a cheap feeling of moral superiority by thinking how you would have done something nicer if it had been you." ~Corwin of Amber (Robert Silverberg) (It's probably someone's sig right here in the forum, but I don't know for sure) |

I love a good vampire story so I just bought KarateMonkey's recommendation of Already Dead by Charlie Huston.
My vote for favorite anti-hero goes to Nick Charles from the Thin Man (with Mike Hammer a close second). A couple classics not yet mentioned -- Hamlet, Tom Sawyer, and Captain Ahab. I also think Jane Austin's Emma makes a pretty good anti-hero with the flaw of being meddlesome beyond belief, but you like her anyway. |

Takeshi Kovacs is very good. Also in sci-fi - Cheradenine Zakalwe from Iain Banks' The Use of Weapons.

Raskolnikov never struck me as the übermensch type, certainly he had some will, but that didn't define him, he had some ambition, but not unlimited ambition. I got the impression he wished to be nothing more than a benevolent autocrat, he recognized all his moral limitations even before the crime. Dunno, it was one of the first books I ever read so very long ago.
![]() I think Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky from "The Possessed" fits the role of übermensch better, which I thought was a very memorable character. |

I have a couple to add to this discussion.
Spider by Patrick McGrath and Euchrid Eucrow in Nick Cave's And the Ass Saw the Angel. I have a feeling Bunny Muro will end up being one of my favourites, but I haven't read the book yet. . . |
