You never know how much you love it until it's gone, do you?

I'm sad for you, too.

I found a wallet in a shopping mall parking lot back in July, In it was a driver's license with the owners home address. No phone number; so I just drove over to the address (about three miles) and parked the car in this townhouse development and knocked on the door but no answer. So I wandered around looking for the owner or someone who might know him. As I was doing this, I saw a man come come purposely out of one of the other houses and walk angrily up to my car.

"Hey", he said, "this is a reserved parking space"

"Sorry", I said, "I didn't notice the sign. I just came here to return something I found. Do you know this guy?", I asked, showing him the wallet.

He looked at it stunned. "That's my son" he stammered and immediately called him on his cell phone. He talked briefly with the boy and heard him gasp when he apparently reached for his wallet. He then laughed and very gratefully thanked me for bringing it home.

And I now have his permission to park in that spot ANYTIME I want!

This thread reminded me of something that happened a few years ago.

I once found someone's checkbook in a restroom at a local college. It probably belonged to the parents who had stopped by that day to pay for their kid's tuition. I know it belonged to 2 people because it had both names, home address, SSNs, driver's licenses, and phone number printed on the check.

I turned it in to the campus police after I called the owners and left a message on their answering machine.

Didn't that turn out nice!

Several years ago I left my purse in a cab (long story, had a lot of packages). Anyway, the next day, when I was getting ready to go to the DMV for a new license, someone called my office and said they had the purse. I went and bought a starbucks gift card, and met the guy - he said he didn't know if everything was in there, but I didn't care. Everything was in there, except for the money. I used to hide $20 bills in compartments in my wallet, just in case I ran out of money. I had about $100 hidden away. Well, that was gone, but the purse, which was worth a lot more, all the credit cards, my blackberry, everything was there. I was so happy! Now, I just hide $20.

I am really puzzled. The briefcase was a big old thing, and very distinctive (lavendar paisly, I have never seen another like it). It is very unlickely someone would want it. The credit card and bank statement information being out there is uncomfortable, but you really can't do anything with it - I have called the bank. The only thing I really miss is my SD card for my kindle!!!

I was riding the bus home from work here in Virginia once when a German couple boarded and sat down near me. After a few minutes they asked the bus driver, in halting English, where the bus went. The driver was a real jerk and just kind of ignored them after a few grunts in spite of the fact it was clear these were foreigners.

They tried asking him again and he just grunted. So, in my halting German, I asked "Entschuldigung. Wo willst du hin? (Excuse me. Where are you going?)"

And they were very relieved to have found someone who understood them and wanted to help. Anyway, it turned out they were on the wrong bus which wouldn't go anywhere near their destination.

"Komm mit mir.(Come with me)", I said when we got to where I lived. We got off the bus and I took them to my car (a BMW ironically enough) and I drove them across town to the restaurant they were trying to find.

"Bitte lassen Sie uns zahlen Sie für das Gas und Ihre Zeit (Please let us pay you for your gas and your time)", they insisted. But I refused telling them that, one day back in Germany, they would come across foreigners who were hopelessly lost. And, when that happened they would have to drive them to their destination.

"Wenn Sie das tun(when you do that)", I said, "Ich werde prüfen, diese Schulden bezahlt wurde (I will consider this debt has been paid).

And, based on the look in their eyes, I'd be willing to bet more lost foreigners have been helped by that couple than I've ever helped

They must have helped the Belgian guy who took his car out of his garage to lead us to the right highway in Gent (or was it Brugge or Brussels?)!

50/50 chance imo, for all the stories I have heard of friends losing phones/bags and other electronics, about half of them get them back when they have ID with the property.

People are generally pretty good, and only a small % would actually attempt to use your credit card or keep the Kindle when you are easily contactable. But really your best bet is if it goes to lost and found, I'd contact them frequently (daily) to see if it has turned up.

It really is a good feeling when you return something to someone. I remember as a kid finding a woman purse in a shopping cart. Despite it being loaded with money my mother had instilled enough of moral compass in me to know that the only option was to return it. I found the woman close by frantically looking for it, returned it and she was incredibly happy. No reward from her, but it was a good feeling to help someone out.

One day, many years ago, I got a call at my office informing me that my checkbook was at a church downtown. A church I had never heard of. I took my lunch hour to find my way to this church and talked to the janitor whom had found what turned out to be a check register, not mine, with my name and office number in it.

Not knowing what else to do, I took it and returned to work. I spent the afternoon going through the line items in the very neatly made out check register. (this is prior to computer days) I finally narrowed down a couple of 'like' names indicating relatives and ended up calling the Dental office they had just paid, and explained my situation. They very kindly looked through their records and had a possible name, but with privacy issues, they wouldn't tell me the name but promised to call them. I provided my name and office number.

A short time later, like half an hour, I get a call from a man asking if I had his check register. We talked a bit, found out he worked on the Air Force Base where I was. He said his wife's purse had been stolen and they got everything back including the checks, but not the check register. He came over to my building to get it.

My first sentence to him, a perfect stranger, was "Why is my name and phone number in your check register?"

He had no idea why it was there and, after thanking me, left. Later I got another phone call from him...

Our back yards were caty-corner from each other. One day my dog had gotten into his yard over his fence and when he walked her back to my house, he got my name and number to call if it happened again. Fortunately, it didn't.

Small world...

Thanks! I checked Craig's List, and it isn't there, I would definately recognize the briefcase (never seen another like it), so I'm hoping it is just lying somewhere, and will make it to lost and found.

I will let you know!
