I have the 505 with the lightwedge cover....still I am proud to say. My son took me to the post supply when he was in the army and slid it into a shovel cover thingy....it works great. I have dropped it a few times with no injuries at all....love it! I still have yet to figure out why the army felt the need to make shovel covers....shouldnt be an issue with them falling and getting dirty...but I found it great for my reader.

it's not a shovel, it's an "e-tool" (honest!... entrenching tool). the shovel head folds down over a very short handle. it is designed to be carried on the outside of a rucksack, and the cover is so nothing is damaged by it. the edges are quite sharp

Just like the Force - it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together. Of course!

Wow. That made me think. I just got a 600 for myself and passed the 505 on to my wife. Well, I didn't think she would even consider reading digitally, but she really likes it.

After reading your story, I'm really concerned. I myself try to really be carefull with electronic gadgets, but for my wife, gadgest fulfill a purpose and the rest doesn't really matter. I hope we get away with only some scratches.

On the other side: If she were to break it, I could pass on my 600 and see what is on the market then ;-)

Ha, ha! Great story!

I've been trying acquire an extra 505 for myself (I travel a lot) and one for my wife and father (as gifts). Let me tell you I fear very much damaging my current reader, because every working 505 I've seen for sale on eBay has sold for what I paid, new, for my device, or even significantly more than what I originally paid!

It's a device that seems to have been one of my wife's better investments (she bought it as a birthday gift for me as I love gadgets and reading). While the Sony site, and other ebook sites, and I do a regular thriving business where I send them money for a large set of ones and zeros to keep me entertained, my local brick and mortar Barnes and Noble isn't quite as happy about the situation, as instead of my yearly B&N gift card, I get a Sony eBook gift card instead.

Anyway, I won't consider any newer model as I understand that the newer models actually support fewer file formats, and the only way to get more media formats supported (at least at this time) would be to buy a netbook (yuck).

I agree that the 505 is probably the best, but I've adjusted to my 900 and now use it most of the time. ... Might even be willing to sell the 505, but would need to seriously consider it first...

Reminds me of the Simpsons:

Bart: [dials 911]
Voice: Hello, and welcome to the Springfield Police Department Resc-u-
Fone[tm]. If you know the name of the felony being committed,
press one. To choose from a list of felonies, press two. If you
are being murdered or calling from a rotary phone, please stay on
the line.
Bart: [growls, punches some numbers]
Voice: You have selected... regicide. If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press one!

Although I don't like the idea of any reader dying an untimely death - thank you for the story and your's wifes edits.

Have you considered trying to become a reader tester for? I am sure they need someone to test how much a reader can endure? That would get a you a free supply of reader and would keep us entertained too
