This is why I decided to go with the Nook. Getting books from elsewhere (except for Amazon) is painless.

And if I really want something from Amazon I can always buy it from their store and strip the DRM off. That's a pain, of course, but it's less of a pain than it would be as a Kindle owner who had to do that for ANYTHING he wanted to buy outside of Amazon's eBook store.

You miss the point that most Kindle owners for the most part, don't *have* to go outside the Kindle store for content. Why do you think the apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch and now Kindle for PC have people so excited... it's because Amazon has the content and best pricing (more often than not) and they now have access.

Kindle owners love being tied to Amazon?? I don't know any Kindle owners who wouldn't want more choices on where to purchase content. Kindle owners can't even take advantage of the libraries that offer ebooks.

Amazon doesn't carry everything and its likely they won't subsidize books forever as they do now, As competition in the reader market heats up they will have to keep reducing the price of the Kindle and then make more money on the content. The writing is on the wall

There are other choices, they may require some work but the choices are there. Most folks don't have the concerns that our small group of tech savvy members have. There are Kindle owners quite happily downloading all of their content from Amazon just as there are Sony owners using the Sony store. At one time, I was pretty happy downloading more expensive books for my Palm from Peanut Press.

Not exactly true. There are are a number of Kindle owners who are dowlading books form the library to use on their Kindles. Granted the number of books available is smaller and the books have to be "fixed" for Kindle use but it is possible.

*No one* carries everything but you're more likely to find it on Amazon than anywhere else, especially if it's non public domain material.

As far as how long they will subsidize books, who knows, Right now it's like a long ebook sale and I, for one, am taking advantage of the great pricing. Since I know how to liberate my ebooks for use on other devices my pocketbook is very happy.

I agree with you ~ One of the things that put me off buying or considering the Kindle was the fact that it would tie me to Amazon. I prefer to be allowed a choice as to where I get my ebooks and the format in which I read them.

Being a somewhat new visitor to the Mobileread forums (though I've been reading ebooks on my Palm -> Treo -> Centro -> Netbook for years) what surprises me most is the flaming of ebook hardware, and thinly veiled attacks on the intelligence of someone who chooses product X over Y. It reminds me too much of the Mac/Linux/Windows wars.

I almost bought a Sony. I almost bought a Kindle. I almost bought an Irex. I have decided to buy a Nook. Am I "right"? Who knows. Who cares? For _ME_ I believe it to be the best choice. And by choice, I mean that it is the best compromise. None of the current eReaders are my dream machine.

So you have a Kindle, an Irex, or a Sony -- all of which I decided against. I'll betcha that 1) You aren't me. 2) Your needs and preferences differ. 3) Neither you nor I are any smarter or dumber as a result.

It would seem that a community like MobileRead would be more about what we all have in common (love of books, love of technology, love of innovation) than yet another place to wage platform wars.

Sorry for the rant, but the last few threads I've read yanked my strings.

Later... and please enjoy your Kindle, Sony, Nook, iRex, Palm, Simbian, iPhone, Netbook, Droid, Blackberry, Nokia, Pre, or paperback.

Agreed. It's a relatively recent phenomenon on Mobileread, and I hope it blows over soon. Fans are good. Fanatics are just...annoying.

I want the Nook for its looks and the ability to read library books without "fixing" them. I have a Kindle 2 and I hate the keyboard which makes it bigger. I only read novels/books and have no need to write or annotate or anything else. Frankly if Amazon made a goodlooking ebook reader without 4 inches of wasted space I may have upgraded.
I tried the Sony readers at a bookstore but the page turns were very slow and it appeared as if the text was not as clear as on the Kindle.

You know the Nook and the Kindle are basically the same size. I agree, that if you're a library user, there are readers that make it easier to take advantage of.

Misinformation...and lots of it!

Quote:
BN Ebooks are priced too high
From what I've seen from browsing between the 2 sites...they have prices that are generally the same.

Quote:
Now I hear you only have one hour per day for the instore feature (all you can read for free when you go to BN- or so they say).
This is something I have asked specifically about while in a local B&N Store this weekend.

Quote:
The nook is going for $269 which I dont even spend that much per year at B&N for books then I will have to spend more cash to fill it up.
They are exactly the same price. Both are $259.

I don't personally own either, as of yet. However, as a homeschooling parent I fully intend to buy my teenager one as part of her school supplies for next year. My sister in law got one for Christmas this year (and was one of the few that ACTUALLY got one shipped before the holidays) and after playing with her Nook and a friends Kindle, the Nook seemed more intuitive to me. That is my own personal opinion, obviously.

Why would it lock out their existing Kindle market? Unless existing Kindle hardware is only able to process AZW format, I don't see why they couldn't provide a software update allowing existing Kindle devices to view EPUB files.

As long as Amazon is making money selling their books in the AZW format I doubt that there is any incentive for them to change. If however they see a marked decrease in sales because people refuse to by AZW books they might change their mind. To be honest I do not think the average Kindle owner (not the ones on this site) really cares about what format the book is in as long as they can read it.
