Kindle 2 works in most countries now with 3G access, which is good.

Well it is done! I am so excited I am running around the boat squealing. (Hmm maybe that is why all the other yachties think I am slightly mad....?) Anyway you might be asking yourself what is it she has done?

Well...............I finally ordered my reader! Yep after much reading of posts and researching and biting of fingernails it came down to cost. Bugger but that is the way of it when you live on a boat. I have ordered the Hanlin V5 from DA Books in Melbourne.

Living in NZ having come from Oz and living on a boat with limited funds makes for choosing a reader a very indepth problem. However this one allows me to do what I really want which is to read. I can download whilst travelling whereever. I make use of public internet cafes in most places so ease of access has to be one of the issues.

Lots of formats, price, ease of use and in our home country for warranty reasons. VERY important! So those are my reasons for choosing this reader from that particular company - oh and the fact that DA book services has a person on this forum that has been helpful, polite and available also swayed my choice.

I have to wait nearly 4 weeks to get it (being Christmas and so on they are out of stock) but I will post my findings when it arrives. I do so hope this is all going to go well.

ps:- have I mentioned that I am extremely excited?

Great price - well done! I'm also thinking of ordering one, because at the moment I'm in Europe and with the strong Euro it will be about 160 Euros incl. shipping. I'd be interested in hearing your experience with the reader once it arrives. Cheers!
I'll be sure to post about it, though I don't get to have it until Christmas so it will be sometime in coming. Now is a good time to buy things from the US for people outside the US. Everyone else's dollar is pretty strong at the moment it seems in comparison. Only a year ago the AU dollar was so crappy I wouldn't have bought anything from the US! Now it only cost me $18 more than it would have if I was in the US.

S/V Willow - Congrats on your purchase! I ordered the same device but from the US as it is half the price to buy it from there and you still get a warranty with it.

I see your order, thank you, S/V Willow!

Your price is AUD317.27 + a small amount for postage (I believe it's AUD7.25).

Laura81, did you really buy a V5 internationally for half that amount?

Usual disclaimer: I work for DA Direct/CBS

Hi cbell,

The V5 I saw listed was $450AU, so no, not half that amount. I ended up paying $215AU for my version from the US. With shipping though, it was $257AU. So only $67 less all up. If I could buy from Australia for the same price as overseas or less I would.

Hi cbell.
Thanks for letting me know you can see my order. I did receive the email confirming it but there is something nice about knowing a human actually can see it and tells me they can. I am waiting with baited breath and am so excited! Thanks.

Oh, hey, ANOTHER yachtie here! I wonder if there are very many more? My partner was always grumbling about the number of books I was starting to collect onboard (even though this is my yacht, sheesh), and so I bought an ereader. They're a fantastic thing.

I always used to read on my computer, but this has brought a whole new level of freedom for reading, not having to hide in the dark because of reflective screen issues. Not to mention laptop batteries being quickly depleted...

Wow this is wonderful! Another yachtie on a non yachtie forum - now that is a first for me. Yep I have the same problem and my partner has restricted me on the number of books I am allowed on board. That is why I am so excited about getting my ereader. Now of course he is grumbling about the amount of time I am spending downloading books from the internet! But he is happy about the amount of books that I am not bringing on board so it's all good.

I would have thought we would make up a large majority of people using this technology being the weight and room is always an issue on yachts but no-one here has even heard of them let alone seen one! Hmm.........might be onto a new business here.

Oh cbell you cannot believe how excited I am. The girls in the office in the marina are already saying "No packages for you today" and they know that it was going to be a 3 week delivery so I may have been going up too often already.

I will be waiting with baited breath for the next week for it to arrive and thank you again for keeping me posted. I will let you know when it arrives. Willow.

Hi Willow, it will take a few days in transit, then it has to go through your local customs, so please be patient - just a little while longer.

I do understand your excitement, though!

In all likelihood that'd be because most yachties are not all that computer-savvy, for all that people have Cmaps installed on their laptops. (And even then -- the number of people I've put that on their computers for them; I should start charging for follow-up help, ha!)
