Regardless of the legalese at the moment the courts are siding with the content providers. Real DVD is a prime example of that. They don't even strip the DRM and there is problems. Personal Use is no longer a valid defense in the eyes of society or the courts.

Until there is a definitive ruling anyone doing this is taking a risk of being found on the wrong side of the law. Mind you its highly unlikely you will get caught. However, many people do not want to go against the law in this manner.
