actually you are quite right. there is a distinction between "squash" and "gourds". the little yellow things are squash, and pumpkins and such are gourds.

Here, they are all called squash, with a distinction between summer, fall and winter varieties, made with the season they are picked and the tickness of the skin. I worked for years in a grocery store, so I'm certain of the English names, but I couldn't say how those names a spread through Canada.
