It seems pretty clear to me that what the Hanlin manual is stating is in regards to the first 3 cycles. It's saying do a full charge/discharge the first 3 times. iRex says the same thing (except they say 5), for the reasons I noted already.

Those directions aren't meant as a long term "best practice" for recharging lithium-ion batteries.

If, however, the DR will shut down because it ‘thinks’ the battery is too low (because of a ‘stuck guage’), then that is something that should be addressed. I do not have any idea if that is the case, but it could be, and bears looking into, IMHO. This is just something I wonder about, and can't consider a serious problem.
Yes, if the meter gets out of calibration then the DR will shut down. It's an issue with the battery technology. That's why some places recommend that every once in awhile you do a full charge/discharge. That will keep the meter calibrated. Fixing issues with lithium-ion technology is beyond the scope of things that can be addressed on the DR.

Yes, exactly. Which brings us back to curbarthedog’s alternative: If the DR can be fully powered off from the User Interface, then curbarthedog’s alternative will be the ideal solution (from the user point of view) for any shutdown/powerup and drain-while-off issues.
