There's an extensive discussion of recharging here:

Power surges? Burning out the battery?
I guess I would be interested if someone was just using the usb computer charging for 1 year and then switched to wall charger and in 1 or 2 months started to experience problems.
I only charge my reader every 2 or 3 weeks for 5 or 6 hours and then remove it.
I understand that some people have problems charging their 505 but I'm just trying to find out if ANYONE who just used the usb computer connection ONLY and never used the wall charger had a problem charging the 505.
If you use both and then develop problems , could be caused by usb or wall charger.
Also, if someone only used the wall charger and NEVER ever used the usb to charge the 505 , did you ever experience a problem charging the battery.
I had problems charging the 505 way back when, after JUST using the usb. Once when my computer hibernated (and discharged the battery) and also pretty much every time I connected the usb to a pc without the Sony software uninstalled.

The power port is connected to a standard regulated charging circuit, and it will work as well as it does for the millions of Sony PSPs out there. Charging properly from the usb and switching to the power port should cause no problems at all. Each circuit works as designed. Unfortunately, Sony decided to include an active 'authorization' detector to activate the usb charging circuit, which is why generic usb wall chargers usually don't work with th Readers. (There may be a few specific types that do work, but I've tried several to no avail.) The power port is a 'dumb' charger that will work flawlessly with the Reader, whether charging from a wall charger or a PSP cable connected to any usb port. Charging through the power port also charges faster, and you can use the Reader while charging. (Dare I use the 'f' word here, and note that this is a 'fact'? )

When my sony 505 was brand new, the battery didn't take a full charge and only lasted about 700-800 page turns or less. Often less than one complete book! After running down the battery fully, and recharging again (doing this a few times,) I now get through 3-4 books without recharging. All charging done on an off-brand PSP wall charger.

This seems to be my problem right now. I have a brand new reader and after exactly one week of usage it stopped turning on. I found this odd since according to the battery indicatior, is still show it had full power the night before.

The first thing I did was to leave it charging for a few hours hooked to the PC since I don't have a psp or sony reader charger. However, the red light never came on. I was wondering if the led light comes on when charging a dead reader? If that's not the case, I might have ran into a different problem.

If it's completely flat, it can take a bit before having enough power to light the red led when charging, but normally, no light=no charge.

Hmm I guess in my case, the device simply crashed. The only way to get it started again was to do a soft reset. I have no idea what might have caused the crash since all I have loaded on the device are three books bought from the Sony store and the last action I took was a shut down of the device via menu.

The red light can take an extremely long time to get started if the device is completely flat and you are charging via usb. And if your computer goes to sleep or hibernates, then it will stop charging altogether.

It takes a few charge cycles for the battery meter to calibrate itself properly, so new devices can display an inaccurate battery meter. This should sort itself out after a couple of charges.

We have a thread on mains charging (which I prefer):

and on usb charging:

That happened to me last week. Exactly the same thing, but after a soft reset, the red light came back on. I did not have the wall charger back then, but I highly recommend it, since I have not had any problems since I got it.
