He's fairly right, though; I wouldn't recommend an ebook reader to most people (and wouldn't call it "liseuse" to the layperson). Having to convert just about everything so that I can see it on my sony, not to mention stripping things of DRM? For a lot of people having their icons disappear off the desktop is a major catastrophe!
Also, being in Australia with the geographical restrictions ... no. I don't mind tinkering, but most people want to be able to do what the Yanks can with the kindle -- go to a bookstore, select it, buy, and Bob's your uncle, you can read it! |

I zink I zee jour problem, ja. Jou arre confuuuuuzink e-books wiz ze deevizez zat read zem! Ja.
E-books are a great extension of literary access. But dedicated devices are not universally compatible yet. Maybe if you had recommended to your friends more generic ways of reading e-books, for instance, on PDAs, smartphones, their PC and Mac, their Blackberries, etc... then let them explore the world of dedicated devices and find the one that best works for them. I think that would be a better way to introduce them to e-books. Ja. (Und pleeze let me know if mine Austrian accent is too thick to understand. Ja.) |

This is not to mention all the free magazines and newspapers I get by using the "Fetch news" feature of calibre. |

English with a German accent, is my guess. Sounds like one of Benny Hill's sketches.

I usually turn people off the ebook market unless they are dead-convinced they want to read books on their phone, pda, or computer. Anything that involves a dedicated ebook reader so far is just ridiculous, and I've not yet had any friends purchase a reader after talking to me. I tell them to wait until the technology is decent and the markets have converged a bit. No idea when that'll happen.
