Well, yeah that's the rub, isn't it. What I saw at the Sony store with my 505 held right next to the 300 (and 600) was as above -- and more or less exactly what I saw with the Astak -- as I would have expected since they apparently use the same display. Of course it could just be my subjective take on it as well....

Fair enough. I am confident, however, that given enough time, you will get the following responses:
  • The blacks are the same on both devices
  • The 300 is more gray than the 505
  • The 505 has better contrast
  • The 300 has better contrast
  • The 300 has a whiter screen
  • The 505 has a whiter screen
  • The screens are the same on both devices

Which is why I suggest to anyone interested in the differences to check for themselves. Heck, there are people here that insist the 600 has no glare, or that the glare is so insignificant that you just won't notice it. I, on the other hand, am in the camp that the glare is significant and I did notice it so I took it back and got the 300. So, who's right, and how does contrasting opinions help anyone who asks "which is better?"

Well since I'm the one that started the thread and asked the question, I'm interested in whatever input I can get.

yeah, same here, I too like all the input too, because it makes us aware of what to look for when we are checking them out.
It is true that it is subjective, but some of us have other ereaders and maybe are considering getting a NEW one and enjoy reading about people that own them and can compare them. Of course , we could disagree , so what, that's part of the fun. We do have people who have both of them and can NOW check for us the White and the Black on both these devices and give their subjective viewpoint. Let's agree that both devices are GREAT and we are just splitting hairs, but , some of us with last generation ereaders are OPEN to better ones , if they are PROVEN to be better.
