I am now fascinated by this and would challenge anybody to come up with two sets of less closely related writers than Wodehouse/Hawking and Sartre/Rodenberry.
The map is of what people read. I read Wodehouse and Hawkings. I do not read any of Satre and Rodenberry. So pretty accurate.

IMHO Rankin is an acquired taste - darker, crueler, and cruder. I've tried several times, but not my cup of tea. Moore & Holt less so.
Rankin's stuff was much lighter early on, I guess the obvious issue would be what books are actually out in ebook format though.

As far as Asprin, his phule books are pretty good too and with them being scifi might even be a better fit than the myth books.

More than a pinch. They're two of my favorite authors, but for the life of me, I can see no connection whatsoever!

Someone once recommended that I read The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks simply because I liked Douglas Adams. The two authors are in no way similar, but I have since gone on to read everything Banks has written (both as Iain Banks and Iain M Banks).

I think they go by people's preferences, not the author's works. You just said they are two of your favorite authors. People who like one usually like the other. That's the connection.

Okay, forgiven.

Asprin's Myth stuff has so far been enjoyable for me (just first two books), but like some Pratchett, it's more smiling-amusing rather than hilarious. The Wodehouse stuff I've read so far (Blandings Castle stuff mostly) has been similarly smile-inducing.
Asprin's is one of the few books I've picked up, started, then put down. Tom Holt's another. I've had a snifter of Wodehouse, and felt a similar lack of enthusiasm, though he's one that I need to make a better effort on than I have.

I did laugh out loud once or twice at Christopher Moore's "Lamb". I have other books of his that I'd like to dive into, but I'm always worried that I'll end up disappointed after a strong showing from Lamb.
I read Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story, and while I didn't mind it (it has its moments), I wasn't inspired to try anything else by Moore until Lamb raised its woolly head. I've not bought it, but I've been curious about it (with quick glances at the content not putting me off).

Cheers,
Marc

I know this will seem odd, but Umberto Eco's fiction and non-academic articles are excellent.

I'm also a huge Zelazny fan.

And you may find Rudy Rucker to your liking.

Kurt Vonnegut - dark humor, many books in a sci-fi setting and there is meaning behind the stories. In this respect his writings are similar to Adams', but otherwise not. Try one, but not Player Piano and not short story collections, go for one of his novels.

I also second Woodhouse, his humor is really great.

Couldn't agree more about Iain Banks (as Iain M. Banks I can take or leave him; science fiction's not really my thing). Complicity and The Business are my favourites I think.

Just noticed that a new Iain (M) Banks book is available (Transition). I did notice though, that two different retailers listed it differently (one as Iain Banks, one as Iain M. Banks). Anybody know the true author?
