Good points Zelda - particularly the one about paying slightly more for a better shopping experience. I know I certainly do that and not just with books.

There's no reason we can't have book stores without physical books. The shelves can be replace by touch screens that you can use to browse the books. It could show the overview and even a sample like we have with Mobipocket. Books would never be misplaced, any book store would have ALL the books available on the market regardless of the size of his shop.

I really don't we why we can't have the best of both worlds, digital books, environmentally friendly reading but without losing the advantages of having knowledgeable people to recommend books and answer our questions.

Save the planet..............stop printing books

i'd love to see a system like that, and as i said, i do think we could easily replace all the cheap pocket editions with ebooks (and why not with displays, like you describe ?). but nonetheless, i think *some* paper editions are worth keeping around. just not all of them.

Given the eventual (and sometimes rapid) obsolescence of computing hardware and software, I think it would always be important to keep paper copies of books around and safely stored. Or else books could be lost forever with all the knowledge and historical value they possess.

Don't let it all bother you. We're all somewhat anal, anyway - I know I am - when it comes to our favorite words, pet peeves, and rabid racoons. (See: I like alliteration, but no one writes in that mode.)

My advice is this: Never apologize for something you feel is right.

On the other hand, I'm one of those people who feel the word will go nowhere: It's like a dead-end street.

Like I mentioned before: Words go in and out of circulation, and some just die of cardiac arrest.

Have fun, is my motto!

Don

That's not saving the planet anyway. I'd vote to keep printing books, even when electronic versions are that advanced. Hopefully by then, I'll be able to build a reasonable paper library for myself and use the electronic readers lying face-up on tables as mood lighting.

This doohicky is way too big! If I wanted to read on something that big, I figure my desktop or laptop would serve the purpose better (and in all likelihood, in more fomats!)

This thing just seems ... I don't know ... gimick-y.

I always hear that Americans can be like that when we travel. It always boggles my mind that people would go to another country and just assume English was spoken!

I have imagined if I could ever travel I'd be wandering around with one of those "translater" programs, hoping against all hope to find an English speaker. But I certainly wouldn't expect to find one! Well, okay - maybe if that country was the UK or Australia! (And given lots of American's point of view against bilingual road signs and legal papers here in the States, you'd think they'd get that maybe other people feel the same way about their own mother tongue!)
