Engraving also makes it more difficult to return a unit.

This is from their Returns & Credit Policies: Any product that is engraved is not eligible to be returned. We offer exchange or repair on defective engraved products.

Maybe that's why they offer engraving for free. It's a guaranteed sale for them.

I'm very curious to see if it's the 505 or the 300 as well. I just yesterday purchased the 505 from Sony ($25 off using their back to school code), but this 'could' be a better deal. Then again, I also get $25 worth of books from them, so it maybe evens out. I didn't get the engraving from them, as I wanted to be able to return it if I want.
Based on everything I've seen and read, I think it'll be more a problem of prying it out of my hands...

Good luck Eric!

I was pointed over here after posting about having bought a reader from the Sears website. After poking around a bit, I called the catalogue order# and asked the rep if they had an item# or any other info on which model it was, and she said it was a PRS300. I pointed out the discrepencies on the website that make it look as though they're selling a 505 model (and it's listed the same way in the Wishbook that came out recently, too). She said she'd pass the info along to customer service to make any necessary corrections.

Mine should arrive around Wed-Thurs next week, so I guess we'll both see

I really hope it's a 505. I don't really plan on taking it with me outside of my home so a 6" screen is better for me.

If it's a 300 I will probably return it and be very unhappy. I ordered it from Sears because I thought it was cheaper, I wasn't working this week and I would have liked to have it. I was going to bet a 505 at Future Shop tuesday morning.

Edit: It just occured to me that Sears doesn't offer a choice of color, I'm assuming they would if it was the 300.

This was posted in the Q&A section on the Sears website by a customer, yesterday: "this is prs300s that is coming out Sept. 16 - it holds up to 350 books not what's in the description - i ordered it thinking it was the prs505 (larger one) - the pic wrong - it shows the prs505"

If it is the 300, which it sounds like it will be, you should call them and let them know why you're returning it. That's too bad if you don't get the 505 like you're expecting. I'd be annoyed, too, at waiting for it only to get the wrong one.

I just came back from Future Shop. I wanted to see the 505 to help me decide tomorrow when I (most likely) get a 300. Big deception, they don't have eReaders in the stores, they're only available online.

If I order 505 one online at 349.00$ I can either have it on Sep. 21 with free shipping or Wednesday with 15$ shipping.

At this point I think I'm gonna keep whatever I get tomorrow. I don't want to order another one and have to wait again. I'm also not so sure that a 6" screen would make such a big difference.

I believe that the newly released 300 and 600 from Sony are the first ebook readers to ever be available in retail stores in Quebec. They are the first of the Sony reader line to come with a bilingual interface, allowing them to be sold here. The 505, which is in English only, is only available through online sources. I could be wrong about this, so if you do happen to come across a 505 in a store, please let me know!

I think that Future Shop and Best Buy stores should have the 300 and 600 in store at some point, but they may not have received them yet. The best bet right now would be Sony Style stores, who should at least have the 300 in stock. The 600 appears to be in fairly short supply everywhere at the moment.

If you are still considering a 505, sonystyle.ca had the best offer last time I checked: $299 plus $25 worth of books from Sony's online store.

Let's see first what you get on Monday. Somehow I can't see Sears already having the 300's when no other store in Canada besides sonystyle has them.

If you have a student in your household you can also save another 25$ at sonystyle.ca (expires 17 Sept.).

Definitely check out the 300 (if that's what arrives) before deciding. I have a 505 and a 300, love them both. The 300 reading experience is much more like the 505 than like a PDA/iPhone. And I have over 120 books on mine, using up less than 1/4 of the internal memory. As I noted elsewhere, the 505 is great. The 300 is just as great for reading, and it is a lot more 'pocketable.' I only wish the 300 came with a folding cover like the 505. I still use the included pouch when putting it in my pocket, though.

I also wondered about Sears having them before anyone else, doesn't make sense unless they start shipping earlier than they're supposed to.

The suspense will fold within 24 hours

As most (all ?) of us expected, it's a 300. I'm a bit disappointed because it's not what I thought I ordered and it's not the good deal I thought it was making but I like it anyway.

A 6" would have been easier for me to hold but I'm satisfied with the 5", I find it easy enough to read using the 2nd font size.

I wouldn't say it's heavy but the weight seems to be concentrated in the middle (battery position ?) so the center of gravity makes it feel a bit odd when I hold it but I'm sure I'll get use to that quickly. I can only imagine I would feel it more with a bigger one like the 505.

Since this is the first time I ever hold/use/see an eReader I find the screen doesn't reflect light as much as paper does and the characters aren't as black, they're more "grayish". When I read about 8 gray scales in the specs I thought these were selectable and that I had a choice of how light/dark the letters would appear but I don't see it anywhere in the menu so I can only assume that it has 8 levels of gray when displaying pictures. All this makes it another good reason to keep it since, according to others, the contrast is better on the 300 than the 505.

I only looked at the reader so far. Now I'm gonna get the rest of the stock out of the box, connect it to my computer and download books.

I'll post back later if I have more comments but I can say right now that I'm not impressed with Sears. First, their web site shows wrong information, second, they don't offer a choice of color, I got the silver one. If I had chosen a 300 from the start I would have bought a blue one........but that's not enough to return it.

Thanks for updating, I guess I know what to expect from my Sears delivery later this week. I wish they'd offered a choice of colour, too, I really wanted a pink 300... but since it's the only place I was actually able to put an order through I'll take what I can get at this point. I called Sears customer service and told them about the problem with their description/photos on the site, hopefully they'll change them and avoid the hassle they'll likely end up with when people start returning/complaining. Although there's nothing they can do about the misrepresentation in the print catalogue.

I thought for sure that it would be the 505. Oh well play with it and if you don't like it you can return it saying it doesn't have the advertised sd slot. Sears

No, the contrast is identical between the two machines. Contrast is a measure of the "difference" between the screen background and "black" characters. Those are identical in the 300 and the 505. The 300 displays more "dots per inch" (200 vs. 167), but the actual "colour" of the background and the "black" characters is the same.

As you rightly surmise, the number of grey-scales is simply a count of the number of "levels of grey" between "black" and "white".
