It entails shutting off DEP (Data execution prevention). I'm not exactly a computer whizz, but I realise that by doing this I lower the safety of my pc. In this setting DEP only works for essential Window components. The wiki has a good page on DEP.

My ebl 3.0 works faultlessly now (I had no trouble with ADE at any time, but this still works as well). So perhaps it's worth trying. It's a bit of a hassle to have to shut off DEP every time I want to hook up the reader as it requires a windows reboot, and having to change the setting again after I'm finished, but I got it working again. You could always choose to do without ebl and just use Calibre for instance.
Maybe I do it differently. You mention the hassle, each time you hook up the reader. I use a different configuration, explicitly excluding eBook library 3.0 all the time. So I don't have to do any configuration at all when hooking up the reader. Thanks for your great tip, never would have tried that.

The following is what I have received from Sony. In my case, the conflicting software seemed to have been an older version of elibrary. I checked the startup window and removed the older version of elibary. Since then, I have been using the new elibrary without any problems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry as the eBook library software crashes or freezes when the Reader is connected to the computer. Please follow the steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. The software may not be frozen, but working. Each time you connect the Reader, the eBook library will automatically connect to the eBook Store to download the latest product information for you. During the download process the user interface may appear to freeze. Depending on the amount of information being transferred and your Internet connection speed, this may take a few minutes to complete. Please Do Not disconnect the Reader during this update.

2. Check our eSupport site to confirm that you have installed the most current version of the eBook library software on your computer and that your Reader has been updated with the latest firmware version:

http://esupport.sony.com

3. There may be an incompatible application running on your computer. After confirming that the Internet update mentioned in Step 1 is finished, disconnect the Reader from the computer, close the eBook Library software and restart the computer. Once restarted, close all applications that may have loaded in the background before launching the eBook library software. Then connect the Reader again.

TIP: Sony recommends the Reader be connected directly to a USB
port on the computer using the supplied USB cable.

4. Leave the Reader connected to the computer and uninstall then reinstall the Reader's USB driver. Please click the link below for these instructions:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/d...rnalId=C126263

5. If the issue continues, disconnect the Reader from the computer and perform a hard reset. Please click the link below for these instructions:

Thank you for your time.

Well, it was crashing and freezing even when my computer wasn't even connected to the internet. (Also when it was.)

I'm running XP and had no problems with Ebook Lbrary 2.5. So I've deleted v3 and reinstalled 2.5.

Crashing

I just got my PRS-300. I installed EBL 3 on two computers (within 1/2 of each other) a netbook running XP and a notebook running Vista Home Premium. The XP machine has continuously worked perfectly, never a glitch. The Vista machine says "This program has encountered an error and must shut down" as soon as I plug the ebook reader in. I tried, deleting, reinstalling, restarting, starting with the ebook already plugged in, plugging in after the library was opened. I could go on and on, I spent around 3 hours trying to get it to work. With the help of some kind members (MGMueller and Autumnsong) I've removed all traces of EBL 3 from the Vista machine and installed V2.5. Needless to say it works great. I've been reading threads that lead me to understand that EBL3 doesn't like Vista or Windows 7. What did Sony only have an old Windows XP machine laying around to test their software on? Inexcusable in my books (pardon the unintentional pun) Great ebook reader, crap software.

Running an iMac. I was able to use the Library function until I loaded Snow Leopard.

Before reading this thread I purchased an ePub book and downloaded the URLLink which normally precedes the download of the book contents to the library. Each time I click on the link I get an Adobe warning/login page, which opens over the library. I have entered my Adobe login information to ostensibly authorise my Mac for Adobe DRM protected content. The process commences, but then stalls and I am informed that the process has failed.

Is this the same problem that others are experiencing....or is paranoia getting to me?

Apple, Microsoft and Sony should read these forums in greater depth and understand the grief they are causing their customers.

Didn't hear of that problem so far.
Most of the users either can't start eBook library 3.0 at all or it crashes later on. It very often crashes when syncing, problems with drag & drop seem to be a bit less often.
Not being able to purchase/download is a new one.
You can download whichever way you want and then manually import into eBook library. It's way from being perfect, but my recommendation would be a Virtual Machine or Bootcamp for a Windows XP session. Download within XP and then copy to your Mac library for the moment.
In general, XP seems to be more stable than Vista or other OS.
