It does appear to only have raised its head since the V1.7. The difficulty is it is in general as far as I can tell, rare and so difficult to replicate. It has happened twice to me but I have no idea why, I cannot see anything different to what I normally do.
I almost always switch off via a dragged icon at the bottom or from the menu. On the occasions when it has switched of itself, there has never been a problem (I've set the time delay to 15mins and 60mins)
I always check the side buttons don't illuminate after closedown, to make sure it has gone off.
I would hope it is fixed in 1.8 or 2.0 whichever is next, but it does seem a bit difficult to track down a cause.

I've had this problem once, but I also have a variation of it. I don't know if it is worth starting another thread.
When I start the device, the red light starts blinking, and it boots with the battery icon showing absolutely zero power, and the pen does not work.
Shutting it down does not help, the device shots down and the red link keeps blinking, and the device does not start this time.
All this goes away if I reset it, but why on earth new firmware is giving me this kind of trouble after 1 year?

I've had it with this unexpected drained battery bug. It seems to happen to me roughly once every two weeks. I can't find any pattern behind it. It makes the device too unreliable; I can't count on it to work when I want to use it.

I am on 1.6 firmware still. Seems like it's been around for ever and doesn't get better with 1.7 either. iRex: fix it! And well before it ruins my device's battery please!

Unhappy

My reader froze up days ago. The reset button doesn't work. When connected to wall charger, the indicator is red, i/o amber as it should be.
The reader froze at the splash screen with irex logo. I have been unable to bring it back to life. I thought of discharging it, by leaving it there, waiting for a complete shutdown and expect a restart after that. But the logo is still there by now.

It seems to be more serious than I expected. Is there any way that I can restart it?
Thanks!

Best Regards,

Michael

Just so you know, the reset button won't do anything visually. It won't clear the screen, even if it works and causes the device to shutdown. Try hitting reset and then the power button to boot it back up.

First, you should charge the device for three hours, just to be sure. Then unplug it, this is important, and boot it, or reset it, whatever you can do. The next step you should do is to install firmware 1.6 to have a nice experience with it, firmwares 1.7.x are very buggy with battery calibration, or battery driver, and use them is a pain in the neck.

This is what I have done and I'm now happy again with my DR1000S, I can leave the device for a whole and when I'm going to use it boots OK and battery level is nearly as full as last time. Firmware 1.7 nearly cost me a battery replacement at iRex support .

That's something I can't confirm. 1.7.1 works very fine with my reader incl. battery and I think this will be the same with the majority of the dr1000s-owners. Otherwise we've had plainly more topics/feedbacks here and in the irex forums.

Thank you guys all.

Because the device hung up after I connected it with wall charger, I didn't realize it's power drain problem. And I came up with the idea to discharge it for a complete shutdown.
After reading the posts regarding this problem, I tried to leave it there charging, and ... , yes, I saw the red light turned amber again.

Thanks.

Yeah, when it reacts like that it already is REALLY EMPTY. Too flat a battery to power up, even when attached to the charger. Looks very worrysome first time it happens to you. Just leave it to charge and it will come back to life after about 5 minutes.

FYI, there was a similar thread posted recently to the iRex forums (not sure if it was from the same person). They were nice enough to update the thread and say that they got it fixed again with the following advice from iRex support:

- Remove all memory cards from the device (important !)
- Connect the DR1000 for 2 hours via USB
- Disconnect DR1000 from USB
- Press RESET gently for 5 seconds
- Start the device via Middle Bottom Sensor

Normally, your problem is solved after these steps.

I have the same problem as michael099. Battery was drained and now it always hangs at the boot logo. Reset doesnt help. FW 1.7.1

Hey iRex, this is extremely annoying!
Gogolo

Edit: runs now again. But I have several, random freezes with 1.7.1 (often a button "hangs", the light of the button stays on and the relating button side (left or right) isnt working anymore, only reset helps).

DR1000 has to be charged to minimal operation level no matter if it is plugged in or not (yes, this is very odd and quite different from any other normal device with battery). I filled the bug report here:

Cheers
