I just picked up a silver 505 @ my local Wal-Mart for $229. Their website also has them at that price. Wal-Mart.com will tell you the 505 is an online only item, that is incorrect. I called the store looking for the 300 only to find out when I arrived that the only readers they had were clearance 505s.

However, BJs had the 505 with case(which is seems like it always included?) and AC adapter for 200. It was basically exactly what I wanted at the price I wanted. I've been very happy with it so far for the past few day. The only annoyance I had with it was fixed nicely with the customizer on this site (I wanted the clock on the reading screen). Anyway, for me, the 505 was a great valid choice.

I will add to the resounding concurrence that the 505 is the one I will stick with for the short term future. If my 505 breaks I will try to replace it with another 505 or perhaps a different 6inch device like the Cybook Opus or the new Australian ECOreader. No way am I going smaller to a 5inch or get a touch screen at the moment .

The 300 is the only new model that has any appeal to me (because of the small form factor) but even then, only as a supplementary reader for when space in a travel bag really is at a premium.

I think the 505 is by far the best of all the available devices - Sony have dropped the ball somewhat. I'm seriously considering buying a second 505 as a backup.

I'm thinking along the same lines, not to mention it's going to be a lot easier to get a 505 here than it was a Kindle.

I'm loving my 505 after about a week of use and thinking seriously about getting a second as a back up or more likely a 300 to go along with it. ...

I was just about to post the same comment. I've had my Sony 505 since December 2007 and it's still working perfectly. I'm seriously considering buying another one as a back up right now, in case they become unavailable in the future.

I love my 505 and would be unlikely to swap it for anything else.
I have no interest in a touch screen however, the I do like the idea of a built in dictionary - still, it will take a huge improvement in the hardware (turn page speed probably being the main focus for me) before I swap to a different device.

I don't think that'll be unnecessary. Once something good comes out, there will be plenty of devices hitting the secondhand market.

Innovation might just be around the corner, given the potential competition in the upcoming year or two. Of course, it could just end up being row upon row of clones and redundant devices too. I'll try to stay hopeful.

Edit: I'm just really hoping there will soon be some improvement in:
  • screen quality
  • ergonomics
  • responsiveness
  • software
  • size economy
Then we'll be on our way!

Obviously not enough of a look, if you still believe the 300 has more glare than the 600!

I did just that.Never a complaint about the 505--but the 300 fits in my jeans pocket easily. If you like the 505, you'll also like the reading experience on the 300. Plus one-handed operation with page advance at bottom center.

505 seems like a valid choice to me too.
I bought one when borders had the sale for 199 and I liked it so much I bought the second one with the sony-card deal for 150 dollars.
If sony came out with 9 inch screen I would be interested in it for pdf type stuff, but the 300/600 seem nice but they just don't seem like the right direction for me. Sony should focus on making the eink BETTER and BETTER and focus on extra features second. We are buying them to READ on and I want the BEST reading print available in best contrast/clarity.
Also, not to be missed is the fact that you can hack the 505 , which I did, and put on better fonts and adjusted the buttons to do stuff I like, like INSTANT turn off instead of stand-by , and other stuff.

Hello everyone,

I am brand-new to this forum. (I had been lurking for a month until I chose to register.) This particular thread is exactly what I was looking for because I think I will get a 505.

I had been deliberating on the 505 vs. the 300 or 600. However, two things have tilted the scales in favour of the 505: the comments in this thread (and elsewhere in the forum) and my air miles. As for the second point, it turns out that I now have more than enough to cash in some of my miles for a new, silver 505. (My plan allows me to redeem miles for merchandise instead of just flights.) So, given that the 505 appears to be the best in Sony class, I will withold buying a 300 or 600 and get a free one with my miles.

One question: is it possible to bookmark passages of books in the 505? I like that one can highlight passages with the new models, but if the 505 can at least offer a bookmark feature, that will be fine with me.
