Speaking as an Aussie who will probably get kicked out soon...

I think it's nice that England won the Ashes. After all, they invented the thing, it's only fair we should let them win occasionally.

Do you mean "there" as in the "UK and other parts of the world", or "there" as in New Guinea? If the former, well it does generally last at least that long there, or, to be more precise, a single test match (eg. as played for The Ashes) lasts (up to) 5 days (and for The Ashes they play five of those test matches).

Cheers,
Marc

I think the English played very well and that combined with some poor decisions by the Australian selectors and Ricky Ponting making poor decisions (batting for too long leading to a draw in one test) sealed the deal.

Disappointing, but you'll see some angry Aussies in the one dayers looking for redemption!

BOTH teams played well. It was an excellent series, and either side could have won. I'd far rather watch a series like this one, than a 5-0 "whitewash" by either side.

Yes, crickets can be noisy at night and if you're very tired it could possibly push you to frustration. I still have to say this is a bit extreme.
Hm, you have a point there... Maybe it's because they're English? (and don't even talk about those Aussies, if you know the history of that country...)

I'd rather watch paint dry, or grass grow, or... well, you get the picture

Did I mention that I think cricket is a boring game?

I think most sports are boring unless you know quite a bit about them.

We used to have a weekly TV programme showing sumo wrestling - which I had always thought rather freakish. But it was actually fascinating once I understood what was going on, and appreciated the skills involved.

True, and as stated earlier, I find most sports utterly boring.

About the only sports-events I have even a remote interest in is Icehocky, but only the worldcup or during the Olympic games. And Formula 1. But thats more an excuse to be able to sit around in front of the TV and drink scotch

Watch out for that croquet ball-- it»s harder than you think. And bigger. It»s a big, hard ball.

I got to experience (well, a youtube experience) cricket for the first time recently, after an aussie friend tried in vain to get me to understand what the game was all about (in my head, it was mixed up as a rugby/polo mutation--turns out, it»s really nothing like either of those sports!). I watched the video, and I still don»t get it. I don»t get why it»s interesting at all! Hit, break something (or you break it when you *don»t* hit? I forget now), and run back and forth between two silly wickets. The stop for tea and cucumber sandwiches sounds promising though! Actually, cucumber sandwiches sounds so quaint and refreshing but the idea of little cucumbers on bread just seems odd too. How did that great country come up with so many bizarro things?

From Stephen Fry's blog:

Quote:
If you can picture the response of a US immigration official asked to reschedule a biometric session because it clashes with a game of cricket then you can picture a stolid stare of stony disbelief.
Nearly lost my breakfast over this one.

Thanks Nate!
