FWIW, I've seen some of this ghosting on a 505 in a Sony Style store. A screen refresh takes care of it. I have to say I think this is fairly normal for eInk and nothing to be worried about. I don't believe this is a defect, maybe someone can tell me otherwise?

Since eInk is essentially a bistable technology (hence there are no power requirements to maintain the state), unless a pixel is overtly refreshed it is going to remain it the state it's in (either black or gray). If after a screen refresh all pixels are not completely aligned in their desired state they are going to show up as ghosting or dirty screen. It's a characteristic of any bistable system.
Bottom line, it's normal and nothing to worry about. |

I've seen them, and I've seen thirty years of Pepsi commercials doing essentially the same thing.
I generally avoid both Apple and Pepsi products - and while those sorts of commercial campaigns aren't the only reason - they are a contributing factor. Some people react very badly to that kind of advertising; I'm one of them. |

It was not my intent to bash the Jetbook, just the deceptive marketing practices I discovered on their website. I was actually on their website because I was about to recommend their device to a guy in my office, but found their website content made me question other attributes of the device, and not knowing what was true and what wasn't made it clear to me I couldn't recommend it. But I see my thread about their shady marketing text has turned into a 'poor pitiful Jetbook' thread, so I assisted you by following your renaming instructions (first page title only). As I don't own the device, I can't say anything except that a green tint LCD surface does not meet my needs and based on that and the blatant misrepresentations on their website, I'll never own the device. I'm sure my opinion, having held and viewed the device, will be considered 'bashing' also since only pro-Jetbook comments are permitted by the same old fanboy cheerleaders I see in EVERY Jetbook thread. How an e-ink fanbook baits Jetbook users
Quote:
You, and one other poster within this thread, have pretended not be bashing the device, but whenever the product is mentioned you can't seem help yourselves and go all out bashing the company and not even mention the positive attributes of the product. I have already addressed these marketing accusations in another thread and I am clearly of the same opinion as Dr. Drib. If you had sincere questions about the Sony or Kindle e-ink screens you would have been better off posting in those forums instead of baiting Jetbook owners in the General Forum with a headline such as "Jetbook's View of e-Ink (or as the Jetbook Fanboys call it: Jetbbok Bashing)". If I had any interest in seriously discussing the Jetbook with you, I might be tempted to enquire as to why a darker e-ink gray screen meets your "needs" better than a lighter, slightly green one. But since you are a self admitted hater of the Jetbook & Co and a reader of Jetbook threads, doesn't that make you a "troll"? ![]() Last edited by akira28; 08-10-2009 at 03:25 PM. |

For me, there are two separate issues here: one is the Jetbook as a device, the other is Ectaco as a company. As a device, I think the Jetbook is pretty reasonable at the $169-$199 price point. I'm not as thrilled with the company, but the hardware seems solid.
Unfortunately, the device taken as a whole does not seem to me to be a better fit for my needs than E-Ink. However, as I do like devices for their own sake, I was interested in seeing their comparison with E-Ink. But when their talking points seemed to directly contradict my experience, they lost credibility. I'm sure there are some people for whom it is the best device out there. I just don't happen to be one of them. |

I'm not basing the Jetbook per say. I am bashing Ectaco and their deceptive & shoddy practices as seen on their website. The comparison list between the Jetbook, Sony 500 and/or 505) and K1 is just awful. And there there is the part about telling customers we can get you any eBook free. Just fill in our request form and we'll get it for you. That's also way off base.

No, as Sony doesn't have the same sort of generous carte blanche offer to help as Ectaco does:

I guess I'm weird - I read Julian Jaynes' "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" for fun when it came out and quite enjoyed it.
It's a good book - and a fascinating idea. |

As for the "jetBook fanboys" -- we are just people who have the device and enjoy it! What is wrong with that? In the end, I think the display comes down to a matter of personal preference. It isn't worth getting that worked up about. As for the Ectaco's offer of free books -- yes, it is misleading, but it has also been addressed elsewhere. It doesn't relate to the "TFT LCD vs. e-ink" discussion. |

My concern is with the cherry-picking of the bullet points in their comparison matrix.
First, they're comparing with the Sony 500 and the Kindle 1, neither of which is readily available. The 500 had already been replaced and was out of production when the Jetbook was first released. Other issues include the idea that E-Ink tires the reader's eye - something that has not been mentioned elsewhere to my knowledge. Yes the display on the 500 is less than perfect - but it had already been replaced by a better device with a better screen by the time the Jetbook was released. It's very misleading and puts any other statements on the website into question. The Jetbook itself is a perfectly decent device - I just don't trust that matrix. |
