Article from CNET announcing the Sony readers:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10303031-1.html

Sony confirms what we've known all along:

Quote:
If you wondering whether the touch screen on this model is any better than the PRS-700's, the answering according to Sony reps I spoke with, is yes. Apparently, the PRS-700's built-in side-light added an extra "light" layer or gap that made the screen less responsive, hurt the contrast ratio (made the screen dimmer), and created some glare issues. Sony has eliminated that layer and the overall touch experience has allegedly improved and the letters on the screen are darker. Also, as a result of eliminating the side-lighting, the PRS-600 is slightly slimmer than the PRS-700.

Also from the article:

Quote:
After enduring a couple of rumors and leaks that took the lid off its latest e-readers a little earlier than it would have liked, Sony's officially announced the two new models: the Reader Pocket Edition ($199) and Reader Touch Edition ($299), both of which will hit stores at the end of the month. The other big news is Sony is going to match Amazon's e-book pricing, making new releases and best seller titles $9.99 instead of $11.99.

Yeah, it was pretty clear then that Sony was either going to give up and go home, come out with something new, or make no changes whatsoever. I think that about covers it.

from the features listed for the 600 :

Quote:
  • Take handwritten notes with the stylus pen or type with the virtual keyboard
  • Notes can be exported and printed out
  • Onboard Oxford American English Dictionary allows you to look up a word by tapping on it (Amazon's Kindle has always had a built-in dictionary, but this is new to Sony Readers)

Well considering it has everything you wanted...

Wait for the firmware update though. You might still get your dictionary. Maybe even the notes..

I'm looking at my 505 now and wondering about buying the 600. I can always give the 505 away to someone. Ridiculously tempted

Booth readers look slick. Esp the 600, and at a $300.

Anybody notice how the 300 model did not have SD Card/Memory Stick. While the 600 did.

Personally I think the light on the 700 was brilliant... no pun intended , but it was poorly executed. I think if they should have done it right not just dumped the solution.
