Oh, you're harsh !
You're forgetting the intrinsic artistic value and all the time spent making all those inside / exploded views !
Just for the anti-hype point of view of the down to earth service manual, it at least deserves a passing grade.

Oh well, I have a weak spot for a exploded view (it makes engineering seem a little bit more like something james bond would do)

I'll give it a C-

300 is too big

Quite the contrary, it is hardly smaller than the 6" PRS-600. Check the other 5" readers, their main advantage is their smaller (almost pocket-) size - Sony completely missed the point with the PRS-300. If they wanted a simple, cheap reader they should have sticked with the 6" panel - it must be cheaper having less ppi (166 vs 200). Having no memory slot is also a mistake - even I who has not used the slots of my 505 would not by it. Only fix for this failure would be the price - less than 150$ (and outside the US less than 150€) can sell this otherwise no one will buy it.

If anyone read the terms for the Google/Sony Reader giveaway, the retail price for the prize is $290. Since that'll most likely be a 600, I'm guessing the 300 will be in the $200ish range.

Sorry, but the dimensions reported in the service manuel match those that you can see in the E-book Reader Matrix for the 5'' devices here on MR (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix)

The 5'' devices there are around 110 * 152 * 10 mm.
The PRS300 should be 107.8 × 157.5 × 10.2 mm.

The dimensions for the PRS600 are 121 × 174.3 × 9.8 mm, which matches the previous 6'' models by Sony.

What I want to see is how is Sony going to present these new Readers to the public. Usually when you offer new models you try to trump up their new features, show how it is a great improvement over the existing ones.

Now you will get a new 5" model, whose only improvement may be its price, but I suspect it's going to be in the range of the current "get it while it lasts" PRS-505 prices, so no one will buy it while the 505 is still available.

And you will get the 6" model that lost all buttons (and possibly also the front light, which maybe a good thing, unfortunately). And with no new features this 6" model is priced about the same as PRS-505 used to cost for two years before it was phased out. Why would anyone bother to upgrade?

Maybe this is not all bad...

I think it's less about upgrades and more about first-time customers. Knowing what I know about these two, I'm very glad I got my 505 when I did.

Yeah, my mistake, I did not check the wiki and thought the others are smaller. Well, they are, but only a little. Mea culpa.

No problem, I just didn't want you or anybody else to have a false impression on the range of 5'' devices.

It's targeted at noobs, certainly. Look at how well the K2 is selling with no SD slot. If the Sony 300 is cheaper and sexier, it'll sell like hotcakes IMO.

also i can't understand how the hell we can compare PRS-600 display with PRS-300 .. it seems more than 1" difference in leaked photos. (if the dimensions are not true!)

Remember that all the sites that are posting the photos of the 300 and 600 are showing them side-by-side, scaled to the same size. However, the two devices are not the same size. From the dimensions given in the service manuals, the 300 is 5/8" shorter in both width and height. As far as total area goes, that makes the 300 a decent amount smaller than the 600. The 300 is roughly the same size as all the other 5" devices. All you need to do is find some shots comparing other 5" devices to other 6" devices to get a better idea of the true size difference.

EDIT: I've quickly slapped together a side-by-side comparison image that's closer to what the real size difference is. It's not exact, but it's close.
