I have the 64bit version, have had it since around April/May. I love it, it's much better than Vista. Running it on my work laptop (Lenovo W500), as well as my personal laptop (Lenovo T400). Battery lasts MUCH longer than with Vista. Neat little perks to it.
I just use the Vista drivers (if there isn't a Win7 ver) and haven't run into any trouble. Even my ancient printer has drivers. |

SweetPea, you can rearrange the order of the applications opened just by dragging them around on the taskbar. This is something you can't do without third party applications on any other version of Windows. You can also pin ones there to function much like the quicklaunch bar that has been around forever. There are reasons to get rid of the old interfaces. As much as people are used to them, they are not effcient. The UI can be heavily modified as well. However, based just off of the defaults, some people simply won't like it because they like the old ui that they have been used to for years. It took me about an afternoon of heavy use to get used to the new UI, and now I prefer it. The stacking method actually works really well in the new UI, but only if you have Aero enabled. Then you have the Aero Peek to see all the different windows inside of the stack and you click on the Title or window of what you want. I actually found it to be more useful.
I personally have Windows 7 RC currently running on two machines. One is a Core2-Quad with 4GB DDR2 and a nice video card, etc... it runs beautifully. The other is a 7 year old laptop and it works quite well there also. The only driver I have had to go looking for was for the USB wireless adapter for my laptop. I just put in the Vista ones (since Windows 7 specific ones weren't available yet) and off I went. For those people who haven't yet taken the plunge, give it a try. The Windows 7 RC is free and available to download through August 20th and will work through June next year. You can get it over at Microsoft's Technet here: http://tinyurl.com/9agzvs |

I've got a pre-order in, but I'll probably cancel it, as I've just bought an iMac & switched to OSX! (Although I've got a copy of XP in a VirtualBox VM to run the Sony eBook Library software!)

I'm running the 64 bit version on my stationary. And I'm loving it. I intend to buy a family license so I can install it on my HTPC and perhaps on my wifes laptop.
For those of you running it on a netbook: I have a Samsung NC10 with XP on it. Is windows 7 feasible speedwise? And how about installing it on my wifes Aspire one Linux version (upgraded to two gb ram)? |

By all accounts Vista SP1/SP2 and Windows 7 are more stable than Macs as well. |

And Windows 7, which is Vista under the hood with a polished UI and less stability for me so far - crashes at least once every couple of weeks - unacceptable these days - is lauded as the greatest thing Microsoft have ever done...I will install the RTM soon and see if they've got it right. |

Could Be, Thought i did wait about 6 months after Vista came out and Dell had released all the new drivers. The Machine I was using was a XPS M1210, with Core2 2ghz Processor, 2GB Ram and Nvidia Discrete Graphics with 128MB Ram which should have theoretical worked fine. What I ran into was that while basic system operations ran ok, adlibt a bit slower, trying to run something like Photoshop, the whole system ground to a halt. In Contrast on running Win7 on the same system (Again a clean Install) the performance was a match for XP, and All the Media Programs such as Photoshop, Premier run Smoothly. And I've yet to see the RC crash, no matter how much I throw at it. As for stability on your system, Are you using the Beta, or the RC. I found that the RC is far and away much more stable then the Beta. |

Installed it for about 1 day then went back to XP. XP is much faster, still too many drivers unavailable for Windows 7 also. I'll wait for Windows 8

I am not using Win 7 at the moment but as soon as it is available I will be putting it on my Boot Camp partition and running it with VMWare.

However, I have a 40yr old Dell Latitude 100L, and there are no Vista-compatible drivers for it on Dell's website. Right now I am stuck in 640x480 resolution. Does anyone know how I can fix this? It says I have a Generic PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. Maybe a simple generic Vista video driver will work? Dunno. Can't worry about that too much right now. Brain is on fire, mouth is electric. I have a dental appointment in 2 hours. |
