As of calibre 0.6.3 the HTML2ZIP plugin can now be customized with an input encoding. Just go to Preferences->Pluging->File Type plugins. Select the HTML2ZIP plugin. Click "Customize this plugin". Type in cp1252 and press OK.
It should now just work. |

Beautiful!
I downloaded Calibre 0.6.3, and of course the change works beautifully. Thanks so much.
And now I've done what I should have done a month ago when I first downloaded Calibre: I donated to support Calibre. Thanks for all your hard work on a wonderful program. |

Ok, what am I doing wrong? I'm trying to convert liberated html from ereader2html to mobi. I followed the instructions and customized the html2zip plugin with cp1252, but it's still removing apostrophes and dashes. Do I need to repackage the html and files that er.exe explodes the ereader file into before converting?

Are the HTML files actually in cp-1252?

Heck if I know? LOL sorry, Kovid...I'm a complete dummy about encoding and how to tell what is which. All I know is if I tell Calibre in the GUI to do it cp1252, instead of apostrophes I get a capital A with a hat on (no, I don't know what the official name is), and that same A before dashes. That makes me think there's an encoding issue, but I have no idea WHAT the encoding issue might be.

Try a few other encodings like utf8, latin1 cp1251, etc

I've tried every encoding you mentioned, and a few more. No luck. I either have no apostrophes or weird characters in place of apostrophes. How do I tell what encoding the HTML file is? I right clicked and hit "encoding" and got Western European (Windows), which according to Wikipedia is CP1252. I'm stumped. The HTML file is fine, but when I try to convert it to .mobi using Calibre it loses those darned apostrophes. Sorry for being a nuisance, Kovid.

Open a ticket and attach the html file, I'll have a look at it when I have a spare moment.

Ok, this is just weird. I tried converting to ePub from the html - no apostrophes. I tried converting to .lit from the html...apostrophes. *throws hands up*

Can I second KazBates query - the fix has been brilliant at putting the speech marks in, which makes it so much easier to read. But it would be good to realign the centred text to the left. Is there a code to enter into calibre for this? Thanks

centering I cant really comment on without looking at sample files. paragraph spacing you can control by simply using the insert blank lines between paragrpahs or remove pragraph spacing options.

Thanks Kovid, that would be helpful. We have just tried a new ereader2html script, but I still got centred output when I converted to lrf. I have checked and converting to epub is fine. Is it the html file or final output that will help you? (Do I upload it as an attachment or is there a better way to send it to you?)
Thanks Rachel |

I would have thought opening a ticket at http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/ and attaching the files would be the best way to proceed. That way the item does not get forgotten and you have tracking facilities.
